Every year, we get asked if Halloween contacts are safe. It’s a very important question, so let’s clear things up. Are costume lenses actually bad for your eyes?
The short answer is no, Halloween contacts are not bad for your eyes when you buy them from the right place and use them correctly. The potential dangers of special FX contacts you hear about are very real, but they come from buying lenses illegally.
The Real Risks of Illegal Costume Contact Lenses
The risks of costume lenses come from products that are not approved or fitted for your eyes. If a seller doesn’t ask for a prescription, that’s a huge red flag that their products are unsafe and illegal.
You might find these lenses at places like flea markets, gas stations, or random websites. Buying from these sellers is a huge gamble for your eyes and can lead to serious problems, including:
- Scratches on the surface of your eye
- Painful eye infections
- Blurry vision or even lasting vision loss
These illegal lenses are often made in a “one-size-fits-all” style. Your eyes have a unique shape and size, and a lens that doesn’t fit correctly can cause real harm.
Are Halloween Contacts FDA-Approved?
We cannot say that a certain style of lens, like a “cat eye,” is always FDA-approved. Many different companies make these styles, but not all of them go through the process to get FDA approval for their products.
At Lens.com, we only sell contact lenses that are FDA-approved. This includes our entire collection of Halloween, costume, and special FX contacts. When you buy from us, you can be confident that you are getting a safe medical device for your eyes.
How Long Can You Wear Halloween Contact Lenses?
A good rule of thumb is to enjoy them for a few hours at a time. For most people, 4 to 6 hours is a safe maximum to keep your eyes feeling comfortable. The most important thing is to listen to your eyes; if they start to feel dry, itchy, or just not right, it’s time to take the lenses out and give your eyes a rest.
And here’s our biggest tip: no matter how tired you are after a long night, take your contacts out before you go to sleep. Sleeping in them is a serious no-go and can lead to a nasty eye infection. That’s a Halloween scare you definitely want to avoid!
How To Get Your Halloween Lenses The Safe Way
You can get an amazing costume look and keep your eyes safe. It’s actually very simple.
- You need a valid prescription. This might sound like a hassle, but it’s important. An eye doctor simply needs to measure your eyes to find the correct fit. This quick check will make your lenses safe and comfortable.
- Buy your lenses from a trusted source. Only purchase from a retailer that asks for your prescription. We always do that here at Lens.com. This is your guarantee that you’re getting safe, FDA-approved products.
Safety Tips When Wearing Halloween Lenses
- Wash and dry your hands well before handling your lenses.
- Put your lenses in before applying makeup. This helps you avoid getting any powder, glitter, or mascara on them. At the end of the night, take your lenses out before washing your face.
- Your contacts are fitted just for you, so never share them with friends, and don’t borrow theirs!
- Carry a backup kit with you. Bring a small bottle of solution and your lens case to the party. That way, if an eye gets irritated, you can pop the lens out easily.
- Check your vision and make sure it’s completely clear before driving. Some special effect lenses, like mesh or full sclera styles, can limit your sight.
