US Halloween Contact Lenses

Halloween contact lenses come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and special-effects designs for costumes, cosplay, parties, and theatrical looks. Options may include cat-eye pupils, blackout styles, white lenses, red lenses, and other dramatic designs that help complete a character. Since decorative contacts are considered medical devices, you'll still need a valid prescription and a proper fit from an eye care professional, even when the lenses don't correct vision.

Explore our selection of Halloween contact lenses in different colors, effects, and replacement schedules to find a pair that suits your costume, prescription, and planned wearing time.

Prescription Rules for Decorative Halloween Contacts

Decorative Halloween contacts follow the same prescription rules as vision-correcting lenses. These requirements apply even when the lenses are worn only for appearance and have no corrective power.

  • A valid contact lens prescription is required. Plano, colored contact lenses, costume, and special-effects contacts can't legally be purchased without a current prescription. An eyeglasses prescription can't be used in its place.
  • You still need an eye exam and fitting. An eye care professional must measure your eyes and check how the lenses fit, since poorly fitted contacts can scratch the cornea or raise the risk of infection.
  • The prescription must match the lenses ordered. It should include the prescribed lens details, correct measurements, and expiration date. Don't substitute a different design or fit simply because it looks similar.
  • Buy only from sellers that check prescriptions. Any legitimate contact lens seller must receive a copy of your prescription or verify it with your prescriber before filling your order, including online orders.

Are Non-Prescription Halloween Contacts Safe to Wear?

Contact lenses, including all costume contacts, with no vision correction can be worn safely only when they're prescribed, properly fitted, and cared for as directed. The term "non-prescription" can be misleading because plano lenses still require a contact lens prescription. Buying costume contacts without an eye exam or prescription can expose your eyes to lenses that don't fit correctly or come with poor care instructions.

A poorly fitted or improperly handled lens can scratch the cornea, cause redness or an allergic reaction, reduce vision, or lead to a serious eye infection. In severe cases, complications may cause corneal ulcers, lasting vision loss, or blindness. Only buy from a seller that verifies prescriptions, follow the recommended wearing and replacement schedule, and remove the lenses immediately if you develop pain, discharge, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or persistent redness.

Daily vs. Reusable Halloween Contact Lenses

Daily and reusable Halloween contacts can create similar costume effects, but they differ in how long they're used and how much care they require. The right choice depends on how frequently you plan to wear them and whether you're prepared to clean and store them correctly.

Daily Halloween Contacts

Daily disposable lenses are worn once and thrown away after removal, so they don't need to be cleaned or stored. They can be convenient for a single party or costume event, but a fresh pair must be used each time, and they should never be reused.

Reusable Halloween Contacts

Reusable lenses can be worn again until the end of their prescribed replacement period, which may range from several days to a month depending on the lens. After every use, they must be rubbed, rinsed, disinfected, and stored in fresh contact lens solution, never water or previously used solution.

Tips for Putting In and Removing Costume Contacts

Costume contacts can take a little practice to handle, especially if you don't wear lenses regularly. Learn the correct technique from your eye care professional before your event rather than trying them for the first time while getting ready.

  1. Wash and dry your hands first. Use soap and clean water before touching the lenses, then dry your hands completely with a lint-free towel. Avoid handling contacts with wet, oily, or lotion-covered fingers.
  2. Check the lens before inserting it. Place it on the tip of your index finger and confirm that it forms a smooth cup shape without visible tears, debris, or outward-flaring edges.
  3. Hold your eyelids open while placing the lens. Pull the lower lid down, lift the upper lid, and gently place the contact on the eye. Release your eyelids slowly and blink a few times to help the lens settle.
  4. Put contacts in before applying makeup. Insert the lenses before using eyeliner, eye shadow, face paint, or other cosmetics. Take them out before removing your makeup to reduce the chance of transferring residue onto the lenses or eyes.
  5. Slide the lens down before removing it. With clean, dry hands, look upward and gently move the lens onto the white part of the eye. Lightly pinch it between the pads of your thumb and index finger, without using your fingernails.
  6. Handle the lens correctly after removal. Throw away daily disposable contacts immediately. Clean and disinfect reusable lenses with fresh contact lens solution before storing them, and never rinse or store them in water.

Remove the contacts and contact your eye care professional if you notice pain, redness, discharge, blurred vision, or continuing discomfort.

Warning Signs That Mean You Should Remove Your Lenses

Some discomfort can come from a dry or poorly positioned lens, but certain symptoms may point to irritation, injury, or infection. Remove your contacts immediately if any of the warning signs below appear, and don't put them back in until an eye care professional says it's safe. If your eyes tend to feel dry after a long day in costume lenses but you still need vision correction, ask your eye care professional whether properly fitted silicone hydrogel lenses may be worth trying for future wear, since they allow more oxygen to reach the cornea. They shouldn't be inserted while your eyes are still red, painful, or irritated.

Unusual or Persistent Redness

Take your lenses out if one or both eyes become noticeably red, especially when the redness continues after removal. Redness accompanied by swelling or worsening discomfort needs prompt medical attention.

Eye Pain, Burning, or Increasing Irritation

Pain that continues or becomes worse after removing the lenses isn't a normal part of contact lens wear. Burning, itching, or strong irritation also means you should stop wearing them and contact your eye care professional.

Blurred Vision or Sensitivity to Light

Remove your contacts if your vision suddenly becomes blurry or lights begin to feel unusually bright or painful. These symptoms can occur with corneal inflammation or infection and shouldn't be ignored.

Discharge or Excessive Tearing

Unusual eye discharge, heavy watering, or crusting around the eyelids may signal an infection. Seek medical care promptly, especially when these symptoms occur with redness or pain.

A Feeling That Something Is Stuck in Your Eye

A persistent gritty, scratchy, or foreign-body sensation can mean the lens is damaged, trapped debris is present, or the eye's surface has been irritated. Remove the lens rather than trying to wear through the discomfort.

How to Clean, Store, and Care for Reusable Halloween Contacts

Reusable Halloween contacts need to be cleaned and stored correctly after every wear to reduce the risk of irritation and eye infection. Follow the care routine recommended by your eye care professional and the instructions provided with your lenses and disinfecting solution.

  1. Wash and dry your hands before handling the lenses. Use soap and water, then dry them with a clean, lint-free towel.
  1. Rub and rinse each lens with fresh disinfecting solution as directed. Never use tap water, bottled water, homemade saline, or saliva to clean or moisten contacts.
  1. Fill a clean lens case with fresh solution every time. Don't reuse old liquid or add new solution to what's already in the case.
  1. Clean the case with contact lens solution, then leave it upside down with the caps off to air-dry. Replace the case at least every three months or according to your eye care professional's instructions.
  1. Keep the lenses within their prescribed replacement period, even if you've worn them only a few times. Decorative contacts worn infrequently should still be disinfected and placed in fresh solution at least every seven days.

Great but limited visibility

Great for the look I was going for. However, do not wear this product if you need to drive - the only vision is through the pupil area, and it takes a second for the contact to move with your eye.

High Prescription Options!!

The hardest thing about finding appropriate contacts with a higher prescription is that most of them have zero prescription. Lens.com offers great options to those who need to see while looking fabulous for Halloween! Thanks!!

Waste of money

Prescription? Made my vision worse. Unwearable! Couldn’t see my face 2’ from mirror. Would have been better off paying less for non prescription from somewhere else.

Looked great for Halloween

I bought the Lestat contacts for Halloween and got some great feedback from my co-workers and friends. They felt a little weird but I could still out of them considering they are just a novelty contact. Don't recommend wearing them like your normal prescription contacts and would console your optometrist before use. Overall they were great.

Fits well, very striking

The prescription worked nicely and I had no trouble with fit. A pleasant surprise is how the contacts glow under the lights of a dance floor.
