Are SFX Contact Lenses Safe?

Yes, SFX contact lenses can be safe when they're prescribed by an eye doctor, bought from a legitimate retailer, and worn exactly as directed. At Lens.com, we only carry FDA-approved contacts, including our Halloween, costume, novelty, and special FX contacts.

The danger usually comes from illegal costume lenses sold without a prescription. Those lenses may not fit your eyes, may not be made with safe materials, and may raise your risk of scratches, irritation, infection, or vision problems.

SFX contacts are still medical devices, even when they're only worn for appearance. That means you need a valid contact lens prescription, proper handling, and the right wearing schedule. If your eyes hurt, burn, turn red, water a lot, or your vision looks blurry, remove the lenses and contact your eye doctor.

How to Safely Put on SFX Contact Lenses

Follow your eye doctor's instructions first. This section is for general education and isn't medical advice.

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water before touching your lenses.
  2. Dry your hands with a clean, lint-free towel.
  3. Check the lens for tears, chips, dirt, or damage.
  4. Make sure the lens isn't inside out.
  5. Place the lens on the tip of a clean, dry finger.
  6. Use your other hand to hold your upper eyelid open.
  7. Use another finger to gently pull down your lower eyelid.
  8. Look straight ahead or slightly upward.
  9. Place the lens gently on your eye.
  10. Blink slowly and let the lens settle.
  11. Check that your vision is clear before walking around or driving.
  12. Remove the lens right away if it feels painful, sharp, or uncomfortable.
  13. Put contacts in before applying heavy makeup, glitter, or face paint.

How to Safely Remove SFX Contacts

Never force an SFX lens off your eye. If it feels stuck, use contact lens rewetting drops approved by your eye doctor and wait before trying again.

  1. Wash and dry your hands first.
  2. Look upward and gently pull down your lower eyelid.
  3. Touch the lower edge of the lens with a clean fingertip.
  4. Slide the lens down toward the white part of your eye.
  5. Gently pinch the lens between your thumb and index finger.
  6. Remove it slowly without scraping your eye.
  7. Clean and store reusable lenses only as directed.
  8. Use fresh contact lens solution, not water.
  9. Never reuse old solution in your case.
  10. Never share your SFX contacts with anyone.
  11. Call your eye doctor if your eye stays red, painful, blurry, watery, or irritated.

Do You Still Need a Prescription for Cosmetic Contacts?

Yes. You need a valid contact lens prescription for cosmetic contacts, colored contacts, Halloween contacts, theatrical contacts, and SFX contacts. That rule also applies to plano lenses, which change your eye appearance without correcting your vision.

A contact lens prescription isn't the same as an eyeglass prescription. Contacts sit directly on your eyes, so the prescription may include fit details such as brand, base curve, diameter, and expiration date.

Be careful with any seller that lets you buy SFX contacts without a prescription. Contacts aren't regular costume accessories. A poor fit or unsafe lens can cause real eye problems.

Best Place to Buy Crazy Contacts

The best place to buy crazy contacts is a legal contact lens retailer that asks for your prescription and sells FDA-approved lenses. Before buying, look for these signs.

  1. The retailer requires a valid contact lens prescription.
  2. The retailer asks for your eye doctor's information if you don't upload a prescription.
  3. The products are FDA-approved.
  4. The product page clearly shows the lens name, quantity, design, and order details.
  5. The retailer doesn't sell one-size-fits-all contacts.
  6. The retailer doesn't suggest switching brands without your eye doctor's approval.
  7. The checkout page shows product price, shipping, taxes, fees, and any current discounts.
  8. The retailer has clear customer service information.
  9. The retailer gives care and ordering information.
  10. The retailer treats SFX contacts like medical devices, not party props.

We check these boxes by offering FDA-approved novelty contacts, prescription verification, product discounts, and a wide selection of costume-ready SFX designs.

Why You Should Shop SFX Contacts at Lens.com

SFX contacts are fun, but they still need to be purchased carefully. Lens.com gives you a safer way to shop novelty contacts online, with FDA-approved products, prescription verification, savings, refill options, and support when you need help.

SFX Contact Lens Discounts And Rebates

Costumes can get expensive once you add clothing, wigs, makeup, shoes, props, and event tickets. Lens.com helps lower the contact lens part of that cost with discounts of up to 70% on popular contacts.

You may also find current product discounts, mail-in rebates, and savings based on order quantity. Before checkout, review the live product price, rebate details, shipping, taxes, fees, and final order total. That makes it easier to see what you're paying before you place your order.

Prescription Verification With Your Eye Doctor

You don't need to have a paper prescription in hand to order from Lens.com. You can enter your eye doctor's name and phone number, and we can contact them directly to verify your prescription. If you already have a copy, you can upload, email, or fax it.

This matters even for SFX contacts with no vision correction. A contact lens prescription helps confirm that the lens is appropriate for your eyes. It can also include details such as brand, base curve, diameter, expiration date, and other values your eye doctor needs to confirm.

Prescription verification helps make sure you receive the lenses your eye doctor prescribed. It also helps avoid ordering mistakes, wrong lens sizing, and unsafe brand switching.

AutoRefill For Future Orders

If you wear contacts regularly or reorder contacts for repeat events, AutoRefill can help you schedule future deliveries. You can sign up during checkout, choose your delivery schedule, and get your lenses shipped on a regular basis.

AutoRefill also gives you 5% off future orders. You'll receive an email before your AutoRefill order ships, and you can update your shipping address, payment method, delivery date, or order quantity when needed.

You're still in control. You can snooze, change, or cancel your AutoRefill subscription through your account.

Online Vision Exam

If your prescription is expired, Lens.com offers an online vision exam option for eligible customers. It can be a convenient way to renew a prescription from home when you meet the service requirements.

An online vision exam can help with prescription renewal, but it doesn't replace every type of in-office eye health exam. If you have eye pain, redness, sudden vision changes, a history of eye disease, or concerns about contact lens fit, schedule an appointment with an eye care professional.

SFX contacts should make your costume look better without putting your eyes at risk. Shop FDA-approved SFX contacts from Lens.com, follow your eye doctor's instructions, and order early so you have time to test the look before your event.

Good

I have been using these contacts every Halloween and they work well with my eyes.

Great but limited visibility

Great for the look I was going for. However, do not wear this product if you need to drive - the only vision is through the pupil area, and it takes a second for the contact to move with your eye.

High Prescription Options!!

The hardest thing about finding appropriate contacts with a higher prescription is that most of them have zero prescription. Lens.com offers great options to those who need to see while looking fabulous for Halloween! Thanks!!

Waste of money

Prescription? Made my vision worse. Unwearable! Couldn’t see my face 2’ from mirror. Would have been better off paying less for non prescription from somewhere else.

Looked great for Halloween

I bought the Lestat contacts for Halloween and got some great feedback from my co-workers and friends. They felt a little weird but I could still out of them considering they are just a novelty contact. Don't recommend wearing them like your normal prescription contacts and would console your optometrist before use. Overall they were great.

Fits well, very striking

The prescription worked nicely and I had no trouble with fit. A pleasant surprise is how the contacts glow under the lights of a dance floor.
