6. Replace your lens case about every three months, or sooner when directed by your eye care professional, and follow the prescribed replacement schedule for the lenses themselves.

There isn't one universal number of hours that applies to every novelty contact lens. Your safe wearing time depends on the specific lens and the instructions from your eye care professional, so decorative lenses should only be worn for the prescribed schedule rather than kept in longer simply because they still feel comfortable.

Take the lenses out sooner when you develop persistent redness, eye pain, discharge, or reduced vision. Improper wear can raise the risk of corneal injury and infection, making it important to follow the prescribed wearing and replacement directions each time you use novelty contacts.

Funky contacts can become the focal point of a costume, especially when their colors and patterns coordinate with makeup and other details. Plan the complete look ahead of time so the lenses complement the character without getting in the way of proper contact lens wear.

Coordinate the Colors and Overall Effect

Consider whether you want the lenses to blend with your makeup and costume palette or create deliberate contrast. Testing the complete look under the lighting you expect to encounter can also show whether the lens color and pattern create the visual effect you had in mind.

Put Your Contacts In Before Applying Makeup

Insert clean contact lenses before starting your eye makeup, then remove the lenses before taking your makeup off. This order reduces the chance of transferring cosmetics or makeup remover onto the lenses while you handle them.

Keep the Costume From Interfering With Your Eyes

Masks, face coverings, elaborate eye makeup, and other costume elements shouldn't push against the lenses or make your eyes uncomfortable. Decorative contacts still require proper fitting and wear practices, so remove them when you develop irritation, redness, pain, or changes in vision rather than keeping them in for the sake of the costume.

Yes, some novelty contact lenses are available with vision correction, while others are plano lenses that only change the appearance of your eyes. The corrective versions can combine a decorative color or pattern with the prescribed lens power you need, so you don't necessarily have to choose between a costume effect and clearer vision.

Even non-corrective novelty lenses still require a valid prescription. A contact lens prescription also accounts for proper fitting, so an eye care professional should determine which lens measurements and corrective power, when needed, are appropriate for your eyes.
