When you read a contact lens prescription, you’ll see a bunch of technical terms—power, diameter, and one that often gets overlooked: BOZR.
So, what is BOZR in contact lenses, and why should you care?
BOZR stands for Back Optic Zone Radius. It sounds complicated, but the measurement describes the curve of the back surface of your contact lens. Let’s talk about why you should always check the BOZR before buying contact lenses of all kinds, including scleral lenses, hard contact lenses, rigid gas permeable contact lenses, and other specialty contact lenses.
Back Optic Zone Radius Meaning
The BOZR contact lens meaning is tied to how the lens fits your eye. It is measured in millimeters and usually falls somewhere between 8.3 to 9.0 mm for soft lenses. A lower number means a steeper curve; a higher number means a flatter one.
Is Back Optic Zone Radius (BOZR) the Same as Base Curve (BC)?
Yes! In most cases, the back optic zone radius is the same as the base curve. Both refer to the curvature of the back surface of the contact lens or the part that touches your eye.
The only difference is that the BOZR is the technical term used in optometry and lens manufacturing. While base curve is the more common, consumer-friendly term you’ll see on your contact lens prescription or packaging.

Why BOZR Matters for Your Eye Health
A properly fitted contact lens BOZR keeps your lenses centered and allows oxygen to reach your cornea. That helps keep your eyes looking clear and feeling fresh throughout the day. On the flip side, a poor fit can rub against the eye or restrict tear flow. Over time, this can lead to irritation or even long-term complications.
That’s another reason why it’s so important to buy from trusted contact lens sellers like Lens.com. We don’t cut corners with prescription requirements and that protects your eyes in the long run.
How is the BOZR Measured?
During your contact lens fitting, your eye care provider uses tools like a keratometer or a corneal topographer to measure the curve of your eye’s surface.
Once they have those numbers, they match you with lenses that have a BOZR close to your corneal curvature. This ensures the lens sits well on your eye.
Even though it’s a small number on your prescription, the back optic zone radius is a big deal. So whether you’re switching lens brands or ordering online, make sure you’re sticking to the BOZR recommended by your doctor.
Wrap Up: The BOZR Is More Than Just a Number
While it’s good to know what BOZR in contact lenses means, your best move is still this: buy from a reputable contact lens source that honors prescriptions and prioritizes your eye health. Because at the end of the day, the right fit makes all the difference!
