Contact lenses are a popular alternative to glasses because they provide clear, natural vision and are ideal for people with active lifestyles. But while eye contacts are convenient, they aren’t without downsides. Eye irritation is a common issue for many wearers. Discomfort can range from a mild itch to persistent discomfort.
In this guide, we’ll break down the most common causes of contact lens irritation, how to get relief, and when to check in with your eye doctor.
Why Do My Contacts Feel Uncomfortable?
Contact lenses shouldn’t hurt your eyes. A little bit of awareness is normal when you first start wearing them, but actual pain, stinging, or redness isn’t.
If your lenses feel off—like there’s something stuck in your eye, or your vision seems blurry—it could be a sign that something isn’t right. Below are the most common causes of contact lens discomfort and what you can do about them.
Poor Fit or Wrong Prescription
Not all contact lenses are designed the same way. Some lenses are wider, steeper, or made of different materials—and your eye shape plays a big role in how they fit.
If your lenses don’t match your eye’s curve, you might feel like your lens is shifting, rubbing, or just not sitting right. This can lead to eye strain, blurry vision, or a gritty sensation throughout the day.
That’s why proper fitting is important. If your discomfort doesn’t go away after the break-in period, it’s time to ask your doctor if you should try a different lens brand or material.
Allergies or Environmental Irritants
If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’re more likely to feel discomfort while wearing contacts. Pollen, dust, pet dander, or even scented products can cling to your lenses and irritate your eyes.
Eye allergy symptoms include redness, watering, itching, or a burning sensation. In some cases, the lens itself isn’t the issue—it’s what’s stuck to it. Daily disposable lenses can help minimize allergy-related irritation since you start fresh with a clean lens every day. You can also switch to glasses during allergy season to give your eyes a break.

Dry Eyes
Contact lenses reduce the amount of oxygen and moisture reaching your eyes, especially if worn for extended periods. For those who already have dry eyes, this can quickly lead to discomfort.
Symptoms include scratchiness, blurred vision, and a feeling like there’s something in your eye. In some cases, your contacts may even stick slightly to your eyes.
Using lubricating eye drops designed for contact lens wearers can help. Switching to lenses made from more breathable materials may also reduce dry eye symptoms.
Eye Infection or Corneal Abrasion
Wearing contacts with unclean hands, skipping disinfecting steps, or using expired lenses can all increase the risk of infection. Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) is a common condition that can cause pain, redness, and blurred vision.
Another cause of discomfort is a corneal abrasion—a scratch on the eye’s surface. This may happen from debris under the lens or from putting in a damaged lens. If your eyes are red, painful, or light-sensitive, stop wearing your lenses immediately and contact your eye doctor. Eye infections need proper diagnosis and treatment.
Debris or Buildup on the Lens
Even the cleanest lenses can pick up small particles—dust, makeup, or pollen—throughout the day. And if you’re not cleaning your lenses regularly or correctly, deposits can accumulate.
These deposits can lead to irritation, blurry vision, or even infection. Protein buildup is especially common in reusable lenses.
Make sure you’re using the right cleaning solution (never tap water!) and storing your lenses in a fresh solution every day. If buildup is frequent, talk to your doctor about switching to daily lenses.
Are You Wearing Old or Expired Lenses?
Every pair of lenses has a usage limit—whether it’s daily, bi-weekly, or monthly. Wearing contacts longer than intended increases the risk of dryness, discomfort, and infection.
Expired lenses can degrade over time and may not stay sterile. Always check the expiration date printed on the box or blister pack. If your lenses feel uncomfortable toward the end of their wear cycle, that’s a good sign it’s time for a fresh pair.
How to Soothe Eye Irritation from Contacts
Not sure where to start? Here are some quick, effective ways to relieve eye irritation:
- Switch to a new pair of lenses if yours feel damaged or cloudy.
- Use lubricating drops made for contact lenses to reduce dryness.
- Give your eyes a break by wearing glasses for the day.
- Wash your hands before touching your eyes or lenses.
- Check your cleaning routine to make sure your lenses are properly disinfected.
If symptoms persist after trying these steps, remove your lenses and book an exam.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If irritation continues for more than a day or two, it’s worth talking to an eye care professional. Pain, redness, sensitivity to light, or discharge should never be ignored.
You don’t have to wait for an in-office appointment either. Lens.com provides a convenient online vision exam so you can update your prescription and get lens guidance from home.
An eye doctor can help you determine if your lens type is the issue—or if your eyes need a break. Either way, don’t push through the discomfort.
