About Monthly Disposable Contacts

Monthly disposable contacts are contacts you wear for 30 days. Like most contacts, you will need to remove them every night before bed. But some monthly contacts can be worn for up to seven days straight before they need to be removed and replaced with a fresh pair.

Benefits of Monthly Disposable Contacts

As the name suggests, monthly disposable contacts are intended to be worn for one month or 30 days before they need to be replaced. Most monthly disposable contacts are designed to be worn daily, but some monthly contacts are FDA-approved for overnight or extended wear. Such contacts are ideal for contact lens wearers who need a flexible wearing schedule. Due to their relatively infrequent replacement schedule, monthly disposable contacts are a good choice for cost-conscious consumers.

Compared to daily disposable contacts, monthly contacts are generally thicker. This means they are less likely to tear, but they still allow plenty of nourishing oxygen to pass through to the eye. The thicker composition of monthly disposable contacts also means they can hold moisture better than daily disposable contacts, which tend to dry up as the day wears on.

Monthly disposable contacts are typically made of silicone hydrogels, which allow up to five times more oxygen to pass through to the eye than other lens materials. By allowing more oxygen to reach the eye, silicone hydrogel contacts help prevent discomfort and irritation during lens wear. Silicone hydrogel contacts also offer a consistent level of freshness and comfort. Almost all monthlies are soft contact lenses, meaning they are made from pliable forms of plastic that conform to the eye.

Monthly disposable contacts are available in a wide range of prescriptions and lens types, including toric and multifocal. Toric lenses correct astigmatism, an imperfection in the eye's curvature that causes blurred vision, while multifocal lenses correct presbyopia, the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects. Both toric and multifocal lenses correct nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia), which may occur alongside astigmatism and presbyopia.

Popular Monthly Disposable Contact Brands

Monthly disposable contacts are one of the most prescribed contacts. Popular brands of these contacts include CooperVision’s Biofinity®, Alcon’s AIR OPTIX® AQUA, and Bausch + Lomb’s ULTRA®. All three contacts are indicated for daily wear or extended wear of up to seven days. They are also available in near- and farsighted prescriptions.

How to Insert and Remove Monthly Contacts

Monthly disposable contacts are soft contacts and as such, you should follow the standard procedure for that type of lens. Start by washing your hands with a mild soap, then dry them with a lint-free towel. Starting with your right eye, scoop the right lens out of the case with your index finger. Rinse it with a cleaning solution that’s specially formulated for soft contacts. Inspect the lens for tears or debris, and make sure it’s not inside-out. Hold your eyelid open, then stare straight ahead while gently placing the lens on your eye. Blink a few times to center the lens. Repeat for the left lens.

To remove monthly disposable contacts, hold your eyelids open and gently pinch the lens between your index finger and thumb. Carefully lift the lens off of your eye. Repeat for the other lens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can you wear monthly contact lenses?

Most people can safely and comfortably wear contact lenses for 14 to 16 hours per day. The precise time can vary by the brand of lens used, as well as the specific guidance from your ECP that you receive on how to wear them. It's always best to try to remove them as soon as possible before you go to bed at night to give your eyes a chance to breathe without lenses in. The recommended maximum wear time for monthly lenses is 30 days.

Are monthly contacts good for 30 days or 30 wears?

Monthly disposable contact lenses should be thrown away precisely 30 days after opening the blister pack, regardless of the number of times you have worn them. There is cumulative potential exposure to bacteria and the environment once a pack of lenses is opened. If you don't wear your eye contact lenses every day, consider consulting your eye doctor about daily disposable contact lenses.

Can you sleep in monthly contact lenses?

Some monthly contact lenses, referred to as extended-wear monthly lenses, can be continuously worn for up to 7 days. This means you can put them in on Monday morning and not have to worry about them much until Sunday night. PureVision family of contacts from Bausch + Lomb is one of the few contacts that can be worn for 30 consecutive days and nights. In all cases, make sure to check with your eye doctor to see if you are a suitable candidate to be prescribed extended-wear lenses.

It's difficult for me to find contacts because I've been suffering from chronic dry eye for years. These are the best ones I've ever used, and I get to change them monthly. That's the easiest for me. After contacting CS they reshipped the order with tracking this time at no additional charge on my behalf. Very much appreciated and great customer service for sure! Would definitely order again in the future.
