Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lens Reviews
Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses
One of the main concerns for those who wear contact lenses is comfort. For decades, many contact lens wearers found that they just couldn’t endure the discomfort that was typically associated with contacts. This began to change in the 1960s and 70s when the first soft hydrogel contact lenses were launched. These soft contact lenses improved oxygen permeability, lens wettability, and overall comfort for wearers. Despite these advances, it wasn’t until 1998 that silicone hydrogel contact lenses became available to the public and contact lens comfort became commonplace.
Silicone hydrogel contacts have an extremely high oxygen permeability, with up to five times more oxygen reaching the cornea than with traditional hydrogel lenses. In 2013, silicone hydrogels accounted for 66% of all contact lens fittings in the U.S., compared to only 24% for regular soft contact lenses. The popularity of silicone hydrogel contacts is due to their effectiveness and higher levels of comfort relative to other types of contacts.
Silicone hydrogel contacts enable lens wearers to keep their lenses in for longer periods of time, known as extended wear, with a much lower risk of hypoxia. Hypoxia is when the cornea’s oxygen supply is significantly reduced—hypoxia is responsible for problems including red eyes, corneal swelling, blurred vision, and general eye discomfort. It can also increase the risk for a number of different eye infections. By significantly increasing the amount of oxygen that reaches the cornea, silicone hydrogel contact lenses increase the safety of both daily wear and extended wear of soft contact lenses.
Silicone hydrogel contact lenses are also useful in the design of specialty contacts. For example, the greater lens mass necessary for the design of toric lenses benefit from using silicone hydrogel material. This has enabled contact lens manufacturers to develop a wider variety of lens designs while still ensuring a healthy amount of oxygen reaches the cornea. Many of the most popular brands of contact lenses are silicone hydrogels including Acuvue Oasys, Air Optix Aqua, and Biofinity. The best way to determine if silicone hydrogel contacts are the right choice for you is to discuss all possible contact lens options with your eye care professional.

Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lens Reviews
I like these new Focus night and day contacts, they are thin so that they are comfortable, they also curl in on themselves very easily.
The feeling of wearing Acuvue Advance contacts is like not wearing anything at all! They are that comfortable. I usually rub at my eyes or get red eyes from wearing contacts, but not so with these! I am happy to wear them!
Whatever is in O2 Optix lenses that keep my eyes moist, I love it! I've never had a contact lens that was able to keep my eyes this moist all day long.
Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism contact lenses are excellent! I love how comfortable my eyes feel. I usually have problems with dryness or irritation, making me take off my contacts mid-day, but I found I could wear these straight through!
PureVision contact lenses made my eyes feel really great all day long, and I love how easy they are to wear and use. I also really like how I can leave them in, so if I'm on vacation or traveling I don't have to worry about where to store my contacts.
I love that I can wear PureVision Toric continuously throughout the month! I don't have to worry about taking them out if I forget, and if I do take them out they are easy to find again with their tinting. Overall a great product for someone forgetful like me!
I love these PureVision MultiFocal lenses. They perfectly correct my presbyopia, providing clear vision at any distance! They are easy-to-use and convenient as well. I will re-purchase!
OMG I love these so much! They are not constantly getting dry or bothering me nor do I feel them every time I blink! I honestly forgot I had contacts in every time I've worn them. I used to use Dialies and those compared to these are crap. I will always recommend Air Optix!
As soon as I put in the Biofinity trial lenses, I knew that they would be the winner over the other trial lenses I was testing. They felt great in my eyes! Biofinity remain comfortable after many hours of wear a day and don't stick to my eyes after a (long) nap. Not having to change them more than once a month is very convenient. Please don't d...
Avaira is a wonderful contact! I really enjoy the fact that they are easy to use, easy to wear and great for my eyes. They offer a lot of perks such as UV protection and high moisture content, so you know your eyes will be healthy the whole time!
I have worn contacts for about 15 years and I have been through my fair share of brands. I've been using Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism now for about 3 years and will not go back to anything else. I can wear them for about 3 weeks and each day they feel like the first day. I absolutely love how they keep my eye moist and I've never been able to see a...
Air Optix Aqua lenses are the best lenses out there now. Can not go wrong with these and I have worn contacts since 1990
I highly recommend Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia contacts for anyone looking for high quality lenses. These are super comfortable, and never leave your eyes feeling dry.
After many trial and errors with my prevouis optometrist, I moved out of state and receive these lens. What great comfort for the first day.
Very comfortable contacts and don't feel like wearing them. Never caused any eye problems like watering or itching. Use to sleep some times with contacts on and wake up with clear vision and no dried eyes. Use to wear even after a month time which is okay I believe and wear until I start feeling itchy eyes and then discard them. Very highly recomme...
Like a previous reviewer, I wore gas permeable contact lenses for years. About five years ago, I gave up on them because I no longer could stand the eye irritation, especially later in the day. So when I found that I could wear Air Optix Aqua Multifocal soft contacts, I was more than ready to try them. I could not be more pleased. Very comforta...
I would highly recommend 1-Day Acuvue TruEye contacts to anyone in the market for contacts. I am a long time wearer of these, and have never had a problem with them.
Needing to see both near and far makes finding a good contact hard. I tried out PureVision 2 HD contact lenses, and finally found my match! I can see clearly at all distances, and now I don't need to worry about bringing along extra glasses 'just in case'!
These are so comfortable! Avaira Toric contacts are unparalleled when it comes to comfort. They have a special moisturized, and my eyes can really feel the difference! I no longer feel like I need to take them out and put in eye drops.
Comfortable and easy are the two words I pick for Biofinity Multifocal contacts! Comfortable because they are moisturizing and don't irritate your eye, and easy because they last for up to 30 days with up to a week of wear! No hassle, no pain!
PureVision 2 HD for Astigmatism contact lenses are the best! They provided me with great vision the entire day, and I felt less irritation and discomfort compared to other contact lenses. I really enjoy how easy they are to wear throughout the whole day.
I will definitely re-purchase these ULTRA contacts! They provide the clear vision and comfort that I have been looking for.
