What are contact lenses made of?

Most contact lenses are made from medical-grade polymers, mainly hydrogel or silicone hydrogel for soft lenses and rigid gas permeable (RGP/GP) plastics for hard lenses. These materials are designed to be safe on the eye while balancing moisture, comfort, and oxygen transmission to the cornea. Some lenses also use surface treatments or wetting agents to improve lubrication and help reduce deposits.

What to Know:

  • Soft lenses are typically hydrogel or silicone hydrogel, which are flexible, water-containing plastics designed for comfort and breathability.
  • GP or RGP contact lenses are made from firm oxygen-permeable plastics (often silicone- or fluorine-containing materials) that hold their shape for crisp vision.
  • “Breathability” depends on the material and lens thickness, which is why your prescription and lens design can affect comfort.
  • Some lenses include UV-blocking additives or surface technologies, but contacts do not replace sunglasses because they don’t cover the entire eye area.

Contact lens materials are engineered to deliver clear vision safely, and the best option depends on your eye health, prescription needs, and how your eyes tolerate different materials.
