Can contact lenses fall out?

Updated: January 20, 2026

Soft contact lenses rarely fall out when they are properly fitted to the eye. Modern lens materials are designed to stay centered on the cornea through natural suction and tear film.

  • Ensure your lenses are correctly fitted by an eye care professional using a slit lamp to check for proper alignment and movement.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes vigorously as physical pressure can dislodge the lens from its central position.
  • Keep eyes hydrated because extremely dry lenses can become loose and shift away from the cornea.
  • Check that you are not wearing your lenses inside out which prevents the lens from gripping the eye surface correctly.
  • Use specialized sports or wrap-around goggles during high-impact activities to protect lenses from wind or physical contact.

Most instances of a lens falling out are caused by an incorrect base curve or diameter. A precise prescription ensures the lens follows the specific shape of your eye for a secure fit.
