Shopping for specialized contact lenses for astigmatism can be challenging. Astigmatism requires a lens that not only corrects vision but also stays perfectly stable on the eye throughout the day. If the lens rotates even slightly, vision becomes blurred.
Both Biofinity Toric and Biomedics Toric are quality lenses made by CooperVision. However, they have distinct differences in material, oxygen flow, and wear schedule.
How Toric Lenses Stabilize Vision
Toric lenses are specially engineered to correct astigmatism, which is caused by an irregularly curved cornea. For a toric lens to work, it must remain centered without rotating when you blink or move your head.
These contact lenses for astigmatism toric use specific design features to achieve stability. They feature a thicker zone or a ballast design, which interacts with the eyelid during blinking to keep the lens oriented correctly. This stability is the primary factor in achieving consistently clear vision with astigmatism. A stable lens prevents the ghosting and blurring often associated with an irregular cornea. The stability system is built into the lens and is not based on your vision prescription.
The material of the lens plays a role in stability. Newer materials offer better surface wettability, which reduces friction and helps the lens settle faster after a blink. When the lens settles quickly, it maintains its orientation and provides continuous, sharp vision.
Material and Wear Schedule Comparison
The fundamental difference between these two lenses lies in their material technology and how long they can be worn.
Biofinity Toric
Biofinity Toric is a monthly disposable soft contact lens. It is made from silicone hydrogel material, utilizing CooperVision’s Aquaform Technology. This technology creates a high-performing lens that naturally locks in water and allows superior oxygen flow to the eye.
The high oxygen permeability makes Biofinity Toric a very good choice for wearers who experience dry eye symptoms or spend long hours looking at screens. It is designed for maximum end-of-day comfort. The material’s ability to move freely across the eye while retaining its rotational stability makes it highly desirable for people with active lifestyles.
Biomedics Toric
Biomedics Toric is a biweekly disposable lens. It is made from a traditional hydrogel material. While soft and flexible, it does not allow the same high degree of oxygen permeability as the silicone hydrogel used in Biofinity. Its smooth, thin edge design helps the lens feel comfortable. The biweekly replacement schedule means the cost of use is higher over the course of a year, as you must purchase more boxes to cover the same amount of time.
Cost and Long-Term Value
When comparing specialized toric lenses, the total annual cost is a major consideration. Although a single box of Biomedics Toric may cost less than a single box of Biofinity Toric, the monthly lens offers better value.
Biomedics Toric is a biweekly lens. You must replace it four times in the time it takes to replace a Biofinity lens once. Over a six-month period, Biomedics Toric requires four boxes to Biofinity Toric’s two boxes. The monthly Biofinity lens is often the more cost-effective option for long-term wear.
The long-term value of Biofinity also includes its superior comfort. The high breathability and moisture retention mean fewer issues with dryness, which reduces the need for rewetting drops throughout the day. This improved comfort and reduced need for other products adds to its long-term cost savings.

Handling and Hygiene Tips
Because toric contact lenses for astigmatism are thicker in some zones, proper handling is necessary to maintain hygiene and lens stability. You should always wash your hands before handling lenses.
- Always clean and rinse lenses immediately after removal. Use a fresh, approved multipurpose solution every night.
- Check that the lens is not inside out before insertion.
- Do not sleep in either lens unless your eye care provider specifically prescribes them for extended wear.
- Discard lenses on the prescribed schedule. Never try to clean and re-use a lens past its limit.
Adhering to strict hygiene and replacement schedules supports long-term eye health and performance, especially for astigmatism correction.
Making Your Decision
Both lenses are quality options that correct astigmatism. The best choice depends on your priorities. If maximum breathability, end-of-day comfort, and long-term cost savings are your goal, the silicone hydrogel Biofinity Toric is often the better fit. If you prefer the familiarity of a biweekly schedule, Biomedics Toric is a dependable alternative. You must consult with your eye care provider to determine the correct fit and brand that works best for your eyes.
You can also use an online eye exam for renewing your stable prescription once you have found the correct lens brand. These remote tests are a fast way to get authorization for your reorder without a full trip to the clinic. Remember, even with a successful online renewal, regular, in-person eye health exams are necessary to check the overall health of your eyes.
