Updated October 17, 2024 – Ever wonder why your contact lenses feel uncomfortable, dry, or even cause blurry vision? You’re not alone. While millions of people wear contact lenses daily, some common issues can happen occasionally. The good news is that most of these problems can be avoided easily with the right care and precautions. Here’s a guide to the most common contact lens problems and how to prevent them.
How to Prevent Eye Infections
- Always wash your hands thoroughly with water and mild soap before handling your lenses.
- Never sleep in lenses unless they are specifically approved for overnight wear.
- Follow your lens replacement schedule – daily disposables, for instance, should only be worn for one day.
- Avoid rinsing your lenses with tap water. It can introduce harmful contaminants to your lenses and eyes.
- Use the recommended cleaning solution, as prescribed by your eye care professional.
- Always rub your lenses gently with the cleaning solution to remove bacteria and protein deposits.
- Dispose of contact lenses that have been stored for more than 30 days, as they lose their effectiveness.
Blurry Vision
Blurry vision while wearing contact lenses can be frustrating. The root cause is usually something simple and fixable. Below are the most common causes of blurry vision with contact lenses and how you can address them.
How to Prevent Blurry Vision
Outdated Prescription. As you age, your vision changes. If your lenses aren’t correcting your vision as they should, it might be time for an updated prescription. Try Lens.com’s online vision exam to get yours updated.
Dry Contact Lenses. When contact lenses dry out, they can blur your vision and attract bacteria. Keep your lenses hydrated with rewetting drops.
Dry Eyes. Some people have trouble producing enough tears, which can cause blurry vision. Use preservative-free artificial tears to keep your eyes moist throughout the day. Applying the drops before you feel discomfort will give you the best results.
Eye Health Problems. If none of the above solutions work, blurry vision could indicate an underlying eye issue. It’s important to consult with your eye care provider to rule out any serious conditions and receive the appropriate treatment.

Contact Lens Ripping or Tearing
Tearing a contact lens is a common problem, especially for beginners. Contact lenses are made from delicate materials, so they need to be handled with care.
How to Avoid Ripping or Tearing Lenses
Handle Gently. Always use the pads of your fingers when inserting or removing your lenses. Never use your fingernails, as they can easily rip the lens.
Keep Lenses Moist. Dry lenses are more prone to tearing. Store them in fresh contact lens solution and apply rewetting drops as needed.
Use Plenty of Solution. When storing your lenses, ensure that the case is filled with enough solution to keep the lenses fully immersed. This prevents them from sticking to the case, which can lead to tears when you remove them.
How to Take Care of Your Lenses
Proper lens care is essential to prevent discomfort and maintain healthy eyes. Here are a few key steps to follow for everyday lens maintenance:
- Always use the cleaning solution recommended by your eye care professional.
- Never reuse old solutions in your lens case.
- Replace your contact lens case every three months to avoid contamination.
- For daily disposables, remember to discard them after each use and never try to extend their wear beyond a day.
- By incorporating these habits into your routine, you can prevent many common issues and enjoy clear, comfortable vision.
