Can contact solution freeze?

Updated: January 15, 2026

Yes, contact lens solution can freeze if it is exposed to very cold temperatures (for example, left in a car or unheated luggage), and manufacturers commonly advise storing solution at room temperature and avoiding freezing. Freezing can affect the solution and even compromise the bottle or seal, which can raise contamination and performance concerns. If you suspect it froze during travel or storage, the safest move is to replace it rather than risk irritation or infection.

What to Do If It Freezes:

  • Follow the bottle or package insert storage instructions, and avoid using solution that has been frozen or exposed to extreme temperatures.
  • Do not use the solution if the bottle is cracked, leaking, the seal is broken, or the liquid looks cloudy, has particles, or seems changed.
  • If your solution froze, the safest choice is to discard it and start a new bottle to avoid reduced performance or contamination concerns.
  • Store solution in a climate-controlled place and avoid leaving it in cars, garages, or checked bags where temperatures can drop below freezing.
  • If your eyes sting, burn, get red, or your vision blurs after using solution, remove your lenses and contact your eye care professional.

Because freezing can affect solution integrity and packaging safety, it’s best to store lens solution at room temperature and replace it if freezing occurs.
