Will contact lenses melt?

Updated: January 14, 2026

Contact lenses will not melt in your eye during normal activities, and heat high enough to melt them would also cause serious injury to your eyes and skin first. People often worry about ovens, grills, or a bonfire, but everyday heat exposure is more likely to dry your lenses out than melt them. The bigger risk is discomfort or irritation, so if your lenses start to feel unusually dry or hot, take them out and switch to glasses until your eyes feel normal.

What to Know:

  • Everyday heat from cooking or being near a fire is not enough to melt contacts on the eye, but it can still make lenses feel dry or uncomfortable.
  • Do not expose lenses, lens cases, or blister packs to high heat, and avoid using hot water on lenses or cases.
  • Remove lenses before hot tubs or water exposure, since heat and water can increase irritation and infection risk.
  • If lenses feel painfully hot, very dry, or suddenly uncomfortable after heat exposure, remove them and switch to glasses until your eyes feel normal.
  • Seek urgent eye care for pain, increasing redness, light sensitivity, discharge, or sudden blurry vision.

Contacts are very unlikely to melt during normal wear, but avoiding high heat and following safe lens habits helps protect comfort and eye health.
