Recent advancements in contact lens technology mean that almost everyone who wants to wear contacts can do so. Manufacturers now produce lenses that correct nearly every type of refractive error, available in various materials and wear schedules.
Lenses Correct Most Vision Needs
There is a common misconception that only simple vision problems like nearsightedness or farsightedness can be corrected with contacts. Technology now allows lenses to correct complex vision issues that once required glasses.
The majority of people who want to wear contact lenses are now able to do so, regardless of their prescription strength or vision condition.
Refractive Errors Corrected by Contacts
| Refractive Error | What Causes the Issue | Corrective Lens Type |
|---|---|---|
| Nearsightedness (Myopia) | Distant objects appear blurry. | Standard Spherical Soft Lenses |
| Farsightedness (Hyperopia) | Close-up objects appear blurry. | Standard Spherical Soft Lenses |
| Astigmatism | Cornea is irregularly shaped. | Toric Lenses |
| Presbyopia | Age-related loss of near focusing ability. | Multifocal Lenses |
Astigmatism was once difficult to correct, but toric lenses provide sharp vision by staying stable on the eye. Similarly, presbyopia was thought to prevent contact use, but multifocal contact lenses for presbyopia can provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, reducing the need for reading glasses.
Health and Lifestyle Factors That Affect Wear
While technology has improved, contacts may not be the best option for people with certain health conditions or high-risk lifestyles.
Health Conditions
Certain health issues can cause discomfort or increase the risk of eye health problems, making contacts a poor fit.
- Severe Dry Eye – Contact lenses rely on the eye’s natural tear film to stay smooth and comfortable. People with chronic dry eye who cannot keep their eyes properly hydrated may find contacts cause further discomfort.
- Infection Risk – People who are particularly prone to eye infections should consider alternatives. Since contact lenses require consistent hygiene and placement directly on the eye, there is an increased chance of transferring bacteria.
- Allergies – People who have severe allergic reactions to specific lens materials or cleaning solutions should consider other alternatives.
Corneal Issues – Conditions that affect the cornea’s shape or health, other than basic astigmatism, may limit lens wear.
Lifestyle and Environment
Even with healthy eyes, certain environmental factors must be reviewed before switching to contacts.
- High Dust or Debris
People who are frequently exposed to high levels of dust, smoke, or other particles that can cause eye irritation may not be the best candidates. These particles can become trapped between the lens and the eye, causing irritation and eye infection. This includes working in construction or dusty outdoor environments. - Poor Hygiene Habits
Contact lenses require consistent cleaning and proper wear schedules. Individuals who have trouble committing to strict hygiene, such as cleaning reusable lenses daily or washing hands before handling them, are at a high risk for infection and should wear glasses instead. - Water Exposure
Extended wear in water, such as swimming or using a hot tub, is highly discouraged. Water contains germs that can cause serious eye infections.

The Importance of an Eye Exam
If you are considering making the switch to contacts, consult with your eye doctor during your next eye exam. A professional eye doctor performs a complete evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate. The doctor checks your tear film quality to see how well your eyes stay hydrated. They also inspect your corneal health for any issues that might affect fit or comfort.
Lastly, the doctor takes precise measurements of your eye’s curvature and size to find a lens that fits correctly. The eye doctor can then recommend the best lens material and replacement schedule for your specific needs. Pairing the correct lens with good wear habits is how most people achieve comfortable vision.
Steps to Contact Lens Comfort
Contact lenses are now an option for the vast majority of people with vision correction needs. Whether you have astigmatism, presbyopia, or simple nearsightedness, there is a lens designed for your eyes. For those with severe dry eye or high-risk lifestyles, glasses remain a safer alternative. The best action is always to consult with your eye doctor to decide which option best supports your eye health.
