AquaComfort Plus® is a proprietary technology developed by Alcon, the global leader in eye care. It was introduced in 2008 as part of the rollout of the DAILIES® AquaComfort Plus portfolio.
AquaComfort Plus combines three wetting agents to ensure a stable pre-lens tear film. The first agent is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), commonly used in eye drops as a lubricant. DAILIES AquaComfort Plus contact lenses are bathed in HPMC within the packaging saline for comfort upon insertion. This comfort is further enhanced by polyethylene glycol (PEG), the second wetting agent in AquaComfort Plus. PEG is typically used in lubricating eye drops.
The third wetting agent in AquaComfort Plus is polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a water-soluble polymer. PVA is released from the lens material and into the tear film to ensure a comfortable contact lens-wearing experience.
Why is the pre-lens tear film important?
The pre-lens tear film is essential for successful contact lens wear. First, it provides a uniform coating over the contact lens. If this layer were rough or irregular, the light would scatter.
Second, the pre-lens tear film provides comfort and lubrication to the palpebral conjunctiva, a transparent membrane that coats the inside of the eyelids.
Finally, the pre-lens tear film helps maintain contact lens hydration for improved comfort throughout the day.
