Contact lenses have come a long way, but there’s one part of wearing reusable contact lenses that hasn’t changed much. You still need to clean and disinfect them after every use. Skipping that routine can leave deposits and harmful microorganisms on your lenses.
What about contact lenses designed to resist those deposits before they accumulate?
That’s the idea behind CELLIGENT Technology, a surface technology found in Alcon’s TOTAL30 monthly contact lens family, including TOTAL30 Multifocal contact lenses and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism contact lenses.
Both lenses use chemistry inspired by the human eye to resist lipid deposits and bacterial attachment. It sounds surprisingly close to self-cleaning, but CELLIGENT doesn’t remove deposits or disinfect lenses. Instead, it makes certain substances harder to attach in the first place.
Can Contact Lenses Really Clean Themselves?
Not yet, at least not in the way most people would expect.
A truly self-cleaning contact lens would need to remove or break down accumulated deposits without the usual cleaning process. Current reusable contact lenses, including TOTAL30 Multifocal and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism, can’t do that.
CELLIGENT Technology takes a different approach. Its engineered surface attracts water molecules while resisting the attachment of certain lipids and bacteria.
For monthly contact lenses, this distinction is particularly relevant. Unlike daily disposables, reusable lenses go through repeated cycles of wear, cleaning, disinfection, and storage. A surface designed to resist certain deposits can help limit their initial attachment, although proper lens care remains necessary.
How CELLIGENT Technology Works in TOTAL30 Contact Lenses
CELLIGENT Technology uses biomimicry, a scientific approach that draws inspiration from structures and processes found in nature.
Its design imitates certain characteristics of the human cornea, particularly the microscopic surface coating known as the glycocalyx.
A Surface Inspired by the Human Cornea
The glycocalyx covers the outermost cells of the cornea and contributes to the eye’s interaction with the tear film.
CELLIGENT Technology uses specialized polymers to create microscopic, brush-like structures on the lens surface. These structures attract water while making it harder for certain lipids and bacteria to attach.
According to Alcon, laboratory testing demonstrated reduced lipid deposition and bacterial adhesion on lenses featuring this technology.
The results concern surface interactions under laboratory conditions. They don’t establish that TOTAL30 lenses prevent eye infections or remain free of deposits during everyday wear.
How Water Gradient Technology Works Alongside CELLIGENT
TOTAL30 Multifocal and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism also use Water Gradient Technology.
Both lenses are made from lehfilcon A, a silicone hydrogel material containing approximately 55% water at the core. Water content gradually increases toward the outermost surface, where it approaches 100%.
Water Gradient Technology creates this moisture-rich outer layer, while CELLIGENT Technology helps resist the attachment of certain substances.
Together, these technologies create a hydrated, deposit-resistant surface. Neither replaces cleaning or disinfection.

The animation below illustrates how water molecules interact with the engineered polymer layer while lipids and bacteria encounter resistance near the lens surface.

How CELLIGENT Technology Is Used in TOTAL30 Multifocal and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism
Although both lenses use CELLIGENT and Water Gradient Technology, their optical designs address different vision needs.
TOTAL30 Multifocal for Presbyopia
TOTAL30 Multifocal contact lenses are designed for people with presbyopia, an age-related change that makes focusing on nearby objects more difficult.
They use Alcon’s Precision Profile Design, which incorporates different optical powers to correct near, intermediate, and distance vision.
CELLIGENT Technology addresses a separate aspect of the lens. Its surface chemistry helps resist certain deposits that can accumulate during repeated wear.
The multifocal optical design handles vision correction, while CELLIGENT and Water Gradient Technology contribute to the lens’s surface characteristics.
TOTAL30 for Astigmatism and Lens Stability
TOTAL30 for Astigmatism contact lenses are designed for people who need toric correction.
Unlike spherical lenses, toric contact lenses have different corrective powers along specific meridians. They need to maintain the correct orientation on the eye for their optical correction to work as intended.
TOTAL30 for Astigmatism uses Precision Balance 8|4 Design, a stabilization system intended to limit unwanted lens rotation.
CELLIGENT Technology doesn’t control lens positioning. Instead, it works alongside Water Gradient Technology to create a moisture-rich surface that resists certain deposits.
Both TOTAL30 designs are intended for daily wear with monthly replacement. Their different optical features mean they aren’t interchangeable without an eye doctor’s assessment.
Do TOTAL30 Contact Lenses Still Need Daily Cleaning?
Yes. TOTAL30 Multifocal and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism require daily cleaning and disinfection, even with CELLIGENT Technology.
Deposit resistance doesn’t prevent every substance or microorganism from collecting on a lens. Cleaning removes deposits and debris, while disinfection targets harmful microorganisms.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following habits for reusable contact lens wearers.
- Wash and thoroughly dry your hands before handling your lenses.
- Remove your contact lenses before sleeping, swimming, or showering.
- Rub and rinse your lenses with the recommended product when directed.
- Store your lenses in fresh disinfecting solution rather than mixing new liquid with used liquid.
- Keep your lenses and storage case away from tap water.
- Replace your lenses according to your prescribed schedule.
Hydrogen peroxide systems require a special neutralizing case and must be used according to their instructions.
CELLIGENT Technology doesn’t replace these precautions. Its purpose is to resist certain deposits, not remove existing contamination or kill bacteria.
Common Questions About TOTAL30 Contact Lenses
Can CELLIGENT Technology Prevent Eye Infections?
There’s no established clinical evidence that CELLIGENT Technology prevents eye infections.
Laboratory findings showing reduced bacterial adhesion shouldn’t be interpreted as proof of lower infection rates among contact lens wearers.
Are TOTAL30 Multifocal and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism Good for Dry Eyes?
Both lenses have a moisture-rich outer surface designed for comfortable wear. Individual comfort still depends on tear film quality, lens fit, wearing habits, and other eye-related factors.
CELLIGENT Technology isn’t a treatment for dry eye disease. An eye doctor can assess persistent dryness and recommend suitable lenses.
Can You Wear TOTAL30 Multifocal for Astigmatism?
TOTAL30 Multifocal and TOTAL30 for Astigmatism are separate products with different optical designs.
People with both presbyopia and astigmatism can ask their eye doctor about multifocal toric contact lenses, including TOTAL30 Multifocal for Astigmatism. The appropriate choice depends on their prescription and fitting needs.
