Noticing fonts on your computer look blurry or getting headaches at the end of the day can signal a need for professional eye care. When you start searching for a provider, you find two titles: ophthalmologist and optometrist.
Both are qualified eye care providers. Their jobs, however, are quite different. An optometrist provides routine eye exams, diagnoses common vision problems, and prescribes glasses or contacts. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can do everything an optometrist can do. They can also treat eye diseases and perform surgery. Most people starting their vision care journey only need an optometrist.
What is an Optometrist?
An optometrist is your provider for all things related to vision correction. Think of them as the primary care provider for your eyes. You can identify them by the credentials OD (Doctor of Optometry).
Focus and Scope of Practice
Optometrists focus on helping you see clearly and keeping your eyes healthy with non-surgical treatments. They are experts in the mechanics of sight.
They perform routine eye exams, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and diagnose common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. They also screen for eye diseases such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. If you get eye surgery elsewhere, an optometrist provides pre- and post-operative care.
What is an Ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eyes. You can identify them by the credentials MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). Think of them as a specialist who provides both medical and surgical treatment.
Focus and Scope of Practice
Ophthalmologists focus on the medical and surgical treatment of serious eye diseases and vision problems.
They perform eye surgeries such as LASIK, cataract removal, or retina repair. They diagnose and treat complex eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal disorders. They can prescribe medications for eye conditions. Like an optometrist, they also provide comprehensive eye exams and prescribe glasses and contacts. They are qualified to handle eye emergencies, such as sudden vision loss or eye injuries.
Who Is the Better Choice?
One professional is not automatically better than the other. The right choice depends entirely on what you need from your eye care visit.
An ophthalmologist is more educated in that they are required to complete medical school and surgical residency. This gives them specialized training in disease management and surgery. However, this does not make them the best choice for every need.
An optometrist deals with routine vision needs daily. If you simply want an updated contacts prescription or need to check if mild headaches are linked to your vision, an optometrist is the better provider for that specific need.

Vision Care for Older Adults
Older adults who have worn glasses or contacts for years can continue seeing their optometrist for basic vision needs.
However, because age can increase the risk for many conditions, getting an occasional check-up with an ophthalmologist is a good idea. An occasional peek into your eyes by both kinds of providers can help identify issues before they become serious problems. A medical specialist can monitor for conditions tied to age, such as cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

Choosing Your Eye Care Path
The right provider is the first step toward healthy vision. For routine checkups, new prescriptions, and simple eye irritation, an optometrist is the best choice. If you have an eye injury, a known disease, or plan to have surgery, an ophthalmologist is required. Knowing the difference guarantees you receive the correct level of care for every stage of your vision health.
Common Questions
How often should I get an eye exam?
Adults should generally have an eye exam every one to two years. Children may require more frequent checkups, sometimes yearly, as their eyes can change quickly. Seniors should aim for annual exams to monitor for age-related conditions.

Yes, an optometrist can diagnose common eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. They can treat mild cases, but they will refer you to an ophthalmologist for advanced treatment or surgery.
