Updated August 5th, 2025 – If you wear contact lenses, you might worry about what happens when they’re left outside on extremely hot or cold days. Luckily, a recent study found that as long as the packaging isn’t damaged, your contact lenses and their solutions stay safe to use, even in extreme temperatures. So, even if your lenses sit on the porch in the heat or cold, they should still be fine.
Let’s talk about how to take care of your lenses in different weather conditions to keep them comfortable and effective. Here are some key tips for managing your lenses in both hot and cold weather.

Cold Temperatures
Can Contact Lenses Freeze?
In cold weather, you might wonder if your contact lenses can freeze. Contacts can freeze if the solution they’re stored in reaches about 5°F, but they will thaw out safely at room temperature if the packaging is intact. So, while it’s possible for contact lenses to freeze in extremely cold conditions, they won’t be damaged as long as their packaging is not compromised. Just let them thaw at room temperature before using them.
Tips for Cold Weather
Cold weather requires specific strategies to keep your contact lenses comfortable and your eyes healthy:
-
Fight dryness by using contact-safe eye drops to maintain moisture.
-
Drink plenty of water to keep your eyes hydrated.
-
Stay away from direct heat like furnaces and car vents since it can dry out your eyes.
-
Protect your eyes from harsh winds and UV rays with sunglasses or goggles.
-
If you’re sick, avoid wearing contacts to prevent transferring infections to your eyes.
-
Switch to glasses to give your contacts a break.
Year-Round Contact Lens Care
Proper lens care is essential for keeping your eyes healthy. Always clean and store your lenses as recommended, and stick to the replacement schedule to avoid issues. If you want to reduce the risk of infections and irritation, consider switching to daily disposable contacts. Also, give your eyes a break now and then by switching to glasses.
Avoid sleeping in your contacts since it increases the risk of eye infections. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, too, as rest is crucial for maintaining eye health. Lack of sleep can lead to dryness and irritation, so prioritize your rest to keep your eyes feeling comfortable.
