How to store contact lenses?

Updated: January 20, 2026

Proper storage of contact lenses is required to prevent contamination and eye infections. Contact lenses must stay hydrated in a sterile environment when they are not being worn.

  • Use only a clean contact lens case and fresh multi-purpose or saline solution for storage.
  • Avoid topping off old solution in the case because this practice allows bacteria to multiply.
  • Rinse the lens case with fresh solution after every use and leave it upside down to air dry on a clean tissue.
  • Replace your contact lens case every three months to avoid the buildup of invisible bacterial biofilm.
  • Never use tap water or homemade saline to store or rinse lenses as water contains harmful microorganisms.

Clean storage habits protect your vision and extend the comfort of your lenses. Contact lenses should never be stored in anything other than a dedicated medical-grade case.
