It depends on the solution, but many manufacturers allow cleaned contact lenses to stay in a closed case with fresh disinfecting solution for up to about 30 days. After that, the solution should be replaced and the lenses should be cleaned and disinfected again before you wear them. Hydrogen peroxide systems follow different rules, including a required neutralization time and often a shorter storage window after disinfection.
Typical Timeline:
- Disinfect for at least the minimum time on your solution label (for example, multipurpose solutions are often several hours, and peroxide systems commonly require full neutralization time).
- If you are not wearing lenses right away, keep them fully covered in fresh solution in a closed case and follow the product’s maximum storage time.
- If lenses sit in the case longer than the label allows (commonly around 30 days for many multipurpose solutions, and sometimes shorter for peroxide systems), discard the old solution and re-clean and re-disinfect before wearing.
- Never “top off” old solution, and replace solution with fresh disinfecting solution each time you store your lenses.
The safe storage limit for contacts in cleaning solution depends on the specific product, so following the label maximum and re-disinfecting after extended storage helps reduce irritation and infection risk.
