Can I wear contact lenses in a sauna or steam room?

Updated: January 16, 2026

Wearing contact lenses in a sauna or steam room is possible but requires caution. High heat and humidity can cause lenses to dry out or trap bacteria against the eye.

  • Blink frequently to keep the surface of the eye moist in high heat.
  • Keep sessions short to prevent lens dehydration and eye irritation.
  • Apply rewetting drops before and after the session to maintain moisture.
  • Use daily disposable lenses and discard them immediately after the session to reduce infection risks.
  • Avoid touching or adjusting lenses with unwashed hands in humid environments.

Bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments. Removing lenses before entering a sauna or steam room is the safest option for eye health.
