Breakthroughs in Contact Lens Technology: PC Technology

PC Technology™ is a comfort-enhancing technology developed by CooperVision, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of soft contact lenses.

Introduced in 1997, PC Technology attracts and maintains moisture to reduce the risk of lens irritation. It is currently found in Proclear® products.

What Is PC Technology?

PC Technology allows contact lenses to incorporate phosphorylcholine (PC), a water-loving molecule naturally found on the outside of every cell, including cells of the human eye.

When PC molecules bind with water molecules in tears, they create a “shield” of water around the lens that:

  • Supports healthy oxygen flow to the eye
  • Reduces evaporation that can lead to dryness
  • Equips the lens with a more deposit-resistant surface
  • Supports the stability of the tear film (which “bathes” the eye)
  • Enhances lens wettability

As a result, contact lenses with PC Technology attract water to maintain surface moisture and hydration, even after 12 hours of wear — offering greater initial and overall comfort.

Contact Lenses With PC Technology

PC Technology is currently found in the following products:

1. Proclear 1 Day

Proclear 1 Day is a daily disposable contact lens that helps reduce eye dryness associated with contact lens wear.

PC Technology helps keep Proclear 1 Day contact lenses feel moist and comfortable throughout the day. The Proclear material also supports a comfortable wearing experience by resisting surface deposit build-up over the course of your day.

Additionally, this lens has an aspheric optical design, which corrects lens and theoretical corneal aberrations for crisp, clear vision.

2. Proclear 1 Day Multifocal

Proclear 1 Day Multifocal is a daily disposable contact lens designed to correct presbyopia — the age-related loss of near vision.

The unique multifocal design of this lens not only preserves distance vision, but also optimizes near and intermediate vision.

For enhanced comfort, Proclear 1 Day Multifocal features PC Technology, which helps reduce dryness throughout the wearing period. Plus, the Proclear lens material resists deposit buildup.

3. Proclear Compatibles

Proclear Compatibles is a monthly disposable contact lens with most of the same features as its daily disposable counterpart.

Thanks to PC Technology, Proclear Compatibles can help with mild discomfort or symptoms relating to dryness during lens wear. Plus, this lens is made of a water-loving material that allows optimal oxygen levels to reach the eye.

Proclear Compatibles is also visibly tinted, so you can easily spot it in your lens case. Note that Proclear Compatibles is FDA-approved for daily wear only.

4. Proclear Multifocal

Another multifocal lens offering from CooperVision, Proclear Multifocal provides crisp, clear vision for people with presbyopia. It also has the added benefit of relieving symptoms relating to dryness during lens wear, thanks to PC Technology.

Proclear Multifocal is a monthly disposable contact lens approved for daily wear only, meaning it needs to be removed, cleaned, and stored properly every night. With proper care and handling, this lens can last up to 30 days before needing replacement.

5. Proclear Toric

Proclear Toric helps provide all-day comfort for people with astigmatism — an imperfection in the eye’s curvature that causes blurry vision — who experience eye dryness associated with lens wear.

The unique toric design of this lens provides optimal on-eye stability, so you don’t have to worry about your contacts shifting out of place and causing blurry vision during wear.

PC Technology helps this lens stay moist and hydrated all day. At the same time, the Proclear material keeps it free from surface deposits that can negatively impact your eye health and wearing experience.

6. Proclear EP

Proclear EP (same as Biomedics EP) is the first and only lens designed specifically for emerging presbyopes (people who notice signs of presbyopia before age 40).

Like multifocal contact lenses, Proclear EP provides clear vision at any distance, near through far. It also provides long-lasting comfort and deposit resistance, thanks to PC Technology and the Proclear lens material.

Proclear EP is a bi-weekly replacement contact lens intended for daily wear only. It needs to be removed, cleaned, and stored properly every night.
