Can You Open Your Eyes Underwater?

Many of us have experienced the temptation of opening our eyes underwater—whether swimming in a pool, splashing in a lake, or diving into the ocean. It might seem harmless or even exciting, but opening your eyes underwater without protection can cause discomfort and pose risks to your vision. While it’s physically possible, it’s important to know why eye doctors strongly advise against it.

Your eyes are incredibly sensitive organs that react strongly to contaminants often present in water. Understanding the potential dangers and how to keep your eyes safe is important for anyone who enjoys swimming or water sports. Let’s explore the risks of opening your eyes underwater, how to safely see beneath the surface, and the steps to take if you accidentally open your eyes underwater.

Why Opening Your Eyes Underwater Is Risky

Every type of water—pools, lakes, oceans, and rivers—contains contaminants that can irritate or even damage your eyes. In swimming pools, chemicals like chlorine and other disinfectants are used to keep water clean but can also irritate your eyes. Natural bodies of water, including oceans, lakes, and rivers, host various microorganisms, bacteria, algae, and debris that can lead to eye infections.
Also, your eyes have a natural film of tears designed to protect and lubricate the eye surface. When exposed to water, this protective layer washes away, leaving the cornea vulnerable. The immediate result is discomfort, redness, and blurry vision, but prolonged exposure or frequent contact with contaminated water can lead to more serious complications.

Common Risks Associated With Opening Eyes Underwater

Opening your eyes underwater, even briefly, can expose you to various eye problems:
Eye Irritation and Allergic Reactions – Chemicals like chlorine in pools or natural irritants in lakes and oceans can cause immediate stinging, burning, redness, or an allergic reaction known as allergic conjunctivitis.
Eye Infections – Water contains microorganisms like bacteria and amoebas. Acanthamoeba, a harmful amoeba found in water, can cause acanthamoeba keratitis—a serious infection potentially leading to severe pain, blurred vision, or even vision loss if not promptly treated.
Physical Eye Injury – Tiny particles or debris in water can scratch your eye’s surface, known as a corneal abrasion, leading to further complications if infected.

What Happens When You Open Your Eyes Underwater?

When you open your eyes underwater without protection, everything appears blurry because water refracts light differently than air, interfering with your eyes’ ability to focus. Alongside blurriness, you might experience immediate discomforts such as stinging, burning, redness, dryness, or increased sensitivity to light once you resurface.
These symptoms typically resolve after you exit the water and your eyes have time to readjust. However, repeated or prolonged exposure can aggravate symptoms, potentially leading to chronic irritation or infections. Thus, protecting your eyes underwater is important for maintaining clear and comfortable vision long-term.

How to Safely Open Your Eyes Underwater

The safest and easiest way to enjoy underwater activities while clearly seeing your surroundings is to wear protective eyewear. Swim goggles or diving masks create a secure barrier, preventing contaminants from reaching your eyes. Ensure your goggles or mask fit properly, creating an effective seal around your eyes.
If you wear prescription eyewear, you have several options to maintain clear vision underwater:
Prescription Swim Goggles. Custom goggles tailored to your specific prescription.
Contact Lenses with Goggles. Daily disposable lenses, such as 1-Day Acuvue Moist or Dailies Total 1, are excellent choices for water activities because they minimize infection risks. Always discard them immediately after swimming.
Dive Masks for Prescription Glasses. Masks designed to fit comfortably over your regular glasses, providing clear underwater vision.

What To Do If You Accidentally Open Your Eyes Underwater

Accidents happen. If you find yourself with irritated eyes after opening them underwater, don’t panic. Follow these simple steps:

1. Remove contact lenses immediately and discard them, even monthly lenses.
2. Flush your eyes thoroughly with sterile saline solution or clean, fresh water if saline isn’t available.
3. Use artificial tears or lubricating eye drops recommended by your eye doctor to soothe discomfort.
4. Apply a cool or warm compress to relieve symptoms like itching or swelling.

If discomfort or blurry vision persists after several hours, consult an eye care professional to prevent complications.
