Updated January 2026 – Tired of glasses fogging up or sliding down your nose? Wondering if it’s time to try contact lenses? Switching to contacts can be a game-changer for comfort, convenience, and freedom during your daily routine.
But like anything new, contact lenses take some getting used to. We have gathered some tips to make your transition from glasses to contacts as smooth as possible.
1. See Your Eye Doctor for a Contact Lens Fitting
Even if you’re eager to start wearing contact lenses, you can’t skip the important first step: seeing your eye doctor for a contact lens fitting.
Glasses and contacts sit at different distances from your eyes, which means the prescriptions need to account for this difference. You’ll need a separate prescription for contact lenses. This requires a comprehensive eye exam and a fitting with your eye doctor.
2. Start Slowly to Adjust Comfortably
Try wearing your lenses for just a few hours each day, gradually increasing the time as your eyes adjust.
Even with the most comfortable lenses, your eyes may need a short period to adapt, which is totally normal. If you wear daily lenses, replace them every day. For reusable lenses, like Acuvue contacts, make sure to take them out before bed.
3. Follow Best Practices for Contact Lens Care
Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching your lenses. Proper hand hygiene is just one part of keeping your contact lenses clean and safe to use. Here are some other tips to keep in mind:
- Never sleep in your lenses unless your doctor approves it.
- Use only contact lens solution, never tap water or saliva and clean your lenses.
- Remove your lenses before swimming or showering.
- Avoid wearing your contacts beyond the recommended time.
- Always put in your contacts before applying makeup or hair products to prevent contamination.
4. Prepare for Seasonal Challenges
Spring can bring extra challenges for contact lens wearers, especially if you have allergies or dry eyes. Allergens like pollen can stick to your lenses and cause irritation, making your eyes red, itchy, or watery.
Artificial tears can keep your eyes moist and reduce irritation. Most over-the-counter artificial tears are contact-lens friendly, but it’s always a good idea to check the label before using them with your lenses.
5. Wear the Correct Type of Contact Lens
It’s important to wear the right type of contact lenses depending on your vision needs. Different conditions require specialized lenses. If you have astigmatism, you’ll need toric lenses. For those who experience presbyopia, bifocal or multifocal lenses are the ideal solution. Always consult with your eye doctor to find the best option for your needs.
