The holiday season brings a change in routine. People attend more parties, travel more, and get less sleep. These changes often cause dry, tired, and irritated eyes. This can quickly make contact lens wear uncomfortable.
It is helpful to know why the holiday season causes eye stress so you can prepare. Learning a few simple steps and choosing the right products can help you keep a comfortable vision through Christmas season.
Why Do Holidays Cause Eye Discomfort?
Your eyes can quickly become uncomfortable when your routine changes. A lack of rest is a major cause. Eyes need sleep to recover and refresh the tear film. Less sleep means the tear glands produce less moisture. This quickly leads to dryness and redness. Dehydration from less water intake and consuming alcohol also affects eye moisture. Alcohol is a diuretic. It dehydrates the body, which reduces the moisture available for tear production. This leaves the lenses feeling dry and gritty.
Environmental changes also play a large role. Indoor heating and forced air systems are common during cold weather. They drastically reduce the humidity in the air. This causes the tear film on your eye’s surface to evaporate faster. Exposure to dust, smoke from fireplaces, or scented candles can also irritate eyes, which leads to uncomfortable lens wear.
How Can I Safely Wear Contacts at Late-Night Events?
Wearing contact lenses beyond the recommended time increases the risk of eye problems. Extended wear limits the flow of oxygen to your eye. This is especially true when you are tired. Follow the wear schedule set by your eye doctor for your specific lens type. You must also prioritize hygiene. Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling your lenses. This is especially true if you are applying makeup or adjusting your costume in a party setting.
Be aware of external irritants like makeup. Makeup residue can cause severe irritation. Eye makeup, such as glitter or powder, should be applied after you put in your contact lenses. Always remove your contacts before removing your eye makeup. This prevents particles from getting trapped under the lens. Switching to glasses as soon as you get home gives your eyes time to rest and breathe.
What Are the Best Solutions for Holiday Dryness?
Addressing dryness with the right products is a simple way to keep your eyes comfortable during the holidays.
You can use rewetting drops to rehydrate the eyes without damaging the lenses. Apply drops before and after a long event. Carry a travel-size bottle with you. Look for preservative-free drops if you have sensitive eyes. Popular rewetting drops are safe to use while wearing contacts.
Switching to lenses designed for superior hydration is also an option. Lenses with a high moisture content or those made of newer silicone hydrogel materials can hold moisture longer. Brands like Acuvue Oasys, Bausch + Lomb ULTRA, and Alcon Total30 are good options for extended wear time and comfort in dry conditions.
If you are dealing with severely dry or tired eyes, scheduled breaks are a good idea. Take your lenses out as soon since you get home. It is also good to switch to glasses during screen time before bed. This allows your eyes to breathe and recover.
Why Are Daily Disposable Lenses Good for the Holidays?
Daily disposable lenses are a clean, low-maintenance choice that can improve comfort in dry, high-germ environments. Because you throw them away after a single use, there is no chance for protein buildup or residue from makeup, dust, or dirt to accumulate.
Daily lenses are a good option for people who travel often or attend many Christmas gatherings. You do not need to carry bulky cleaning solutions or cases. You can simply put in a fresh pair each day. This can reduce the risk of irritation and eye infection. Brands like Dailies Total1 and 1-Day Acuvue Moist are made with moisture technology that makes them comfortable throughout a long day or night.

What Causes Discomfort for Experienced Wearers?
If you have been wearing contacts for a while, you know your discomfort is not a “new wearer” issue. The problem can be caused by a poor fit, improper lens care, or a worn-out lens. These issues can be solved so you can go back to being a happy contact lens wearer.
Poor Fit
A lens that is too tight can cause a lack of oxygen to your eye. This can lead to redness and swelling. A lens that is too loose can move around and cause blurry vision. It may also fall out. A professional fitting with an eye doctor can fix this. Your eye’s shape and size can change over time. Regular eye exams can help you stay in a lens that fits your eye.
Hygiene
If your lenses are dirty, they can cause discomfort. Dust, dirt, and other debris can get on your lenses. This can cause irritation. Proper cleaning is a simple way to avoid this problem. You should always wash your hands before handling lenses. Use a fresh solution every time you clean and store them. Do not reuse old solution. Using an all-in-one solution, such as Biotrue Multipurpose Solution, is a good way to keep your lenses clean without a lot of effort.
Lenses Are Worn Out
Every lens has a set lifespan. Daily disposables are meant to be worn for one day. Monthly lenses should be replaced once a month. Wearing lenses past their recommended time can cause discomfort. Protein and calcium deposits can build up on the lens surface. They can make the lenses feel uncomfortable and can cause eye irritation. This buildup also reduces oxygen flow to your eyes, which can cause them to feel tired and red.
When Should I See an Eye Doctor?
You should not have to live with uncomfortable lenses. If you cannot find what is causing the discomfort, you should see an eye care professional. An eye doctor can give you a checkup to find any issues. They can also confirm if your prescription is correct.
There are certain times you should get medical help right away. You should book an appointment if you experience:
- Severe or persistent pain in your eyes.
- A sudden loss of vision.
- Discharge or pus from your eyes.
- Extreme light sensitivity.
- Swelling around your eyes.
Getting Back to Comfortable Vision
Contact lenses are meant to be a simple, comfortable form of vision correction. If you feel any discomfort, there is a reason for it. It could be something simple like dry eyes or a more complex problem. Getting help from an eye doctor is the best way to get the right solution for your eyes. With the right care and a good pair of lenses, you can get back to comfortable vision.
