If you’re looking for long-lasting vision correction, then Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses might be what you need. Unlike soft lenses, RGP provides sharper vision, higher durability, and better oxygen flow to the eyes. But how do they work, and what makes them different from other lens types?
In this guide, we’ll explain what RGP contact lenses are, the different types available, how to choose the right one, and where to buy them—especially if you’re shopping online at Lens.com.
What Are Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses?
Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are a type of hard contact lens made from oxygen-permeable materials, offering distinct advantages over traditional soft lenses.
RGP lenses are crafted from durable plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea, promoting eye health. Unlike earlier hard lenses made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which were impermeable to oxygen, RGP lenses incorporate materials like silicone acrylates and fluorosilicone acrylates. These advancements enhance oxygen permeability and comfort.
Type of RGP Lenses
Standard RGPs
Best for: General vision correction.
Standard RGP contact lenses provide sharp, stable vision by maintaining their shape on the cornea. They are custom-fitted, allowing for better oxygen permeability and reduced risk of dry eye compared to soft lenses. Their small size promotes tear exchange, which helps keep the eyes healthy.
Toric RGPs
Best for: Astigmatism correction.
Designed with different curvatures to correct astigmatism, these toric RGP lenses provide crisper vision than soft toric lenses. They stay more stable on the eye, reducing rotational movement, which can blur vision in soft toric lenses.
Multifocal RGPs
Best for: People with presbyopia (age-related near vision issues).
These lenses incorporate multiple vision zones, allowing wearers to see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances. They offer more precise vision correction than soft multifocal lenses due to their stable optical surface.
Scleral RGPs
Best for: People with Keratoconus (a condition where the cornea is cone-shaped) and Severe dry eye syndrome or corneal irregularities.
These larger lenses rest on the sclera (white of the eye) rather than the cornea, creating a fluid reservoir that keeps the eye hydrated. Their design prevents irritation and provides exceptional clarity for those with irregular corneas.
Ortho-K Lenses
Best for: Individuals who prefer not to wear lenses during the day (e.g., athletes, those with dry eyes) and children and teens with progressing myopia
These specialized RGP lenses are worn overnight to reshape the cornea, temporarily correcting nearsightedness for glasses-free vision during the day. Effects are reversible, so consistent wear is required to maintain results.
How to Choose the Best RPG Contact Lens?
Selecting the best RGP contact lenses brand depends on individual vision needs, eye health, and lifestyle. RGP lenses are known for their durability, high oxygen permeability, and ability to provide sharp vision, especially for individuals with astigmatism or corneal irregularities.
Factors to Consider:
- Material and Oxygen Permeability: Modern RGP lenses are made from materials that allow oxygen to reach the cornea.
- Customization: RGP lenses can be tailored to address specific vision problems, such as keratoconus and high astigmatism, providing effective correction where soft lenses may fall short.
- Durability and Cost-Effectiveness: With proper care, RGP lenses can last for up to a year or more, making them a cost-effective option compared to frequently replaced soft lenses.
