Understanding lens power is important since it directly affects how clearly and comfortably you see. Unlike eyeglasses, contact lenses sit directly on the eye. Thus, the power needs to be more precise, especially in higher prescriptions.
Back vertex power (BVP) is one of the standard measurements used in contact lens prescriptions that plays a major role in ensuring accurate vision correction and proper lens fitting. Understanding how back vertex power works can help you make smarter choices when shopping for lenses online at trusted retailers like Lens.com.
What Is Back Vertex Power?
Back Vertex Power (BVP) is the effective power of a contact lens or spectacle lens, measured at the back surface of the lens—the side closest to your eye. It represents how strongly the lens bends (refracts) light to focus it properly on the retina.
The distinction between FVP and BVP becomes particularly significant in lenses with substantial thickness or complex designs, where the curvature and thickness can cause notable differences in how light is refracted. For most standard lenses, BVP is the primary measurement considered, as it directly relates to the lens’s performance in correcting the wearer’s vision.
Back Vertex Power in Contact Lenses
BVP is essential in contact lens prescriptions because unlike sunglasses, contact lenses sit directly on the eye, which rest about 12–14 mm away. This difference in position affects how lenses bend light onto the retina.
For lower prescriptions, the impact is minimal. However, for higher prescriptions, this distance can significantly change the effective lens power needed. Without adjusting for BVP, a prescription designed for glasses could lead to overcorrection or undercorrection in contact lenses, resulting in blurry vision or discomfort.
This is why professionals use the BVP formula when converting spectacle prescriptions to contact lens values, especially for those with high myopia or hyperopia. Accurate BVP calculations are also critical in fitting rigid gas permeable contact lenses, where precise power and positioning are vital.
How to Calculate Back Vertex Power
Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) use the BVP formula to manually calculate the necessary adjustments when converting prescriptions. This is especially important when the prescription is strong enough that the distance between the glasses and the eye makes a significant difference in how the lens focuses light.
Back Vertex Power Calculation Formula
When calculating, they use the formula below:
BVP = F/1−(d⋅F)
Where:
- F is the original spectacle lens power (in diopters)
- d is the vertex distance (typically 12 mm or 0.012 m)
- BVP is the corrected contact lens power
Optometrists use this formula during fittings or when ordering lenses, especially for high prescriptions, to ensure the new lens provides the same effective visual correction as glasses.

When are BVP Calculations Necessary
Here’s the catch though, BVP calculations aren’t always needed. However, they can become crucial in situations where:
- When the prescription exceeds ±4.00 diopters
- Transitioning from eyeglasses to contact lenses
- Fitting specialty lenses (e.g., RGP or Scleral Lenses)
NOTE: It’s essential to consult with an eye care professional when making these adjustments. They have the expertise and tools to ensure that the contact lenses are correctly fitted, providing optimal vision and comfort.
Final Thoughts
BVP plays a critical role in achieving accurate, comfortable vision with contact lenses. It accounts for the difference in lens position between eyeglasses and contact lenses to ensure the prescribed power truly matches your eye’s needs. Without adjusting for BVP, wearers risk blurred vision, discomfort, or poor lens performance.
Because BVP calculations can get technical, it’s important to consult with an eye care professional. They have the tools and expertise to measure, calculate, and recommend the right contact lens power for your eyes.
Once you’ve confirmed your BVP and prescription details, you can order lenses confidently at Lens.com. From daily disposables to RGP lenses, Lens.com offers verified prescriptions, affordable pricing, and helpful customer service—so you can see clearly and save.
