Athletes are constantly seeking ways to gain a competitive edge, and recently, the latest contact lens technology might offer exactly that.
A new study at the 2024 American Academy of Optometry meeting revealed that High-Energy Visible (HEV) filtering contact lenses could enhance athletes’ visual perception in ways previously achieved only through specialized eyewear. Here’s how:
Enhancing Brightness Perception With HEV-Filtering Contact Lens
HEV-filtering contact lenses are a type of contact lens designed to shield the eyes from high-energy visible (HEV) light. Otherwise referred to as blue light. HEV is emitted by digital screens, LED lights, and sunlight, and excessive exposure has been linked to digital eye strain and, possibly, long-term retinal health issues.
As per a study led by Professor Billy R. Hammond at the University of Georgia, Athens, HEV-filtering soft contact lenses may actually make the world appear brighter to wearers. And for sports athletes and active professionals, it can fundamentally change how they perceive their environment.
Examples of HEV-filtering contact lenses are Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lens and Acuvue Oasys with Transitions.

How Does HEV-Filtering Contact Lens Work? Benefits and Opportunities
When HEV-filtering contact lenses filter light, they create sharper edges in our visual field. Even more intriguingly, they trigger what scientists call a Purkinje shift—a phenomenon where our eyes’ rod cells (typically most active in low light) become more engaged. Thus, resulting in clearer and brighter vision.
One of most exciting finding is its potential impact on visual range. The study found that by reducing blue haze (a common limiting factor in distance vision) and enhancing chromatic contrast, these lenses could help athletes spot and track distant objects more effectively.
All of these can especially benefit the following:
- Athletes
- Pilots
- Military personnel
What This Means For The Future of Sports
With this, athletes might not need to choose between protective eyewear and optimal vision anymore. Instead, they could have both benefits in a single, comfortable contact lens solution.
While more research is needed to fully understand the implications, this research supported by Johnson and Johnson Vision Care suggests that we’re on the cusp of a significant advancement in sports vision technology. One that could help athletes perform better while protecting their eyes.
