About Silicone Hydrogel Contacts

About Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Silicone hydrogel contact lenses are the latest in a line of developments aimed at improving the clinical performance of contact lenses. These contacts have high oxygen permeability, meaning they allow plenty of oxygen to pass through the lens to the cornea. The cornea needs oxygen to stay healthy and function properly.

Features of Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Silicone hydrogel contact lenses are made of silicone hydrogel, a polymer that contains both hydrogel and silicone.

Hydrogel is a thin, pliable, and water-loving material that conforms to the shape of the eye, while silicone is a gel-like polymer with a high degree of flexibility.

Both hydrogel and silicone hydrogel contain water, but the latter is more porous. This means it allows more oxygen to flow through to the cornea for white, healthy-looking eyes.

Silicone hydrogel’s enhanced oxygen permeability means lens wearers are less likely to suffer from corneal hypoxia (lack of oxygen supply to the cornea) when using silicone hydrogel lenses. This is why most contact lenses that are FDA-approved for overnight wear are silicone hydrogel contacts.

Popular Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Many of the most popular brands of contact lenses are silicone hydrogel contacts, including ACUVUE® OASYS®, AIR OPTIX® AQUA, and Biofinity®. All three contacts are available in near- and farsighted prescriptions, and they come with a visibility tint for easier handling during insertion and removal.

Other popular brands of silicone hydrogel contacts include Bausch + Lomb ULTRA and PureVision®. Both contacts can be worn daily for two weeks or continuously for up to six nights and seven days.

How Much Are Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses?

Silicone hydrogel contacts can cost $30 to $55 per box of six lenses, with each box lasting three months. If you wear contacts regularly, expect an annual lens cost of $240 to $440.

How to Insert and Remove Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Start by washing and drying your hands with mild soap and water, then dry them thoroughly with a lint-free towel. Scoop your first lens out of the case with the index finger of your dominant hand and rinse it with a cleaning solution that’s specially formulated for soft contact lenses. Inspect the lens for any tears or debris and make sure it’s not inside-out. Using the middle finger of your dominant hand, pull down your lower eyelid. If necessary, use the middle finger of your non-dominant hand to pull your upper eyelid. Look upward and gently put the lens on your eye. Blink a few times to center the lens. Repeat this with the other lens.

To remove silicone hydrogel contacts, hold your eyelids open and gently pinch the lens between your index finger and thumb. Carefully lift the lens off of your eye. Repeat with the other lens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between hydrogel and silicone hydrogel?

Hydrogel lenses were some of the first lenses made of soft materials, specifically water-containing plastics called hydrogels. They have a naturally high water content and may be suitable for dry and delicate eyes.

Silicone hydrogel lenses are an advanced type of soft contact lenses that are more porous than regular hydrogel lenses and allow even more oxygen to reach the cornea than hydrogel-based lenses. This feature makes them a great choice for extended wear, and an excellent choice generally.

Why is silicone hydrogel popular?

The most significant benefit of silicone hydrogels is that they allow up to five times more oxygen to reach the cornea than regular hydrogel lenses. Without a healthy oxygen supply, the eyes can become dry and itchy, and vision may begin to blur - a condition known as hypoxia.

Which contact lenses are silicone hydrogel lenses?

Silicone hydrogel lenses include the Acuvue Oasys, Biofinty, Dailies Total 1, and Air Optix line of contacts, each of which are extremely popular choices amongst wearers and ECP's alike.

Are silicone hydrogel contacts safe?

A majority of all contacts sold in the market today are silicone hydrogel-based, so by that measure, they can be considered safe. However, this is a broad question directed to a specific situation. No single solution is perfect for every individual. There are distinct benefits to silicone hydrogel lenses, including their superior oxygen transmissibility, however some users have reported increased sensitivity, deposit, or general discomfort. Some users prefer the older hydrogel-based contacts. If you're looking for contacts with some of the most advanced comfort features available, silicone hydrogel lenses need to be considered.

Focus Night & Day

Monthly Disposable

These work well for me as i am a convenience whore. For several years with the blessing of my eye Doc, I put them in and leave them for a month. I use wetting drops in the morning and again at night. I am sure to go three or four days at the end of the month with no contacts in just to let my eyes rest and recover. These are perfect.

O2 Optix

PureVision

My contact lenses have been out of stock since October - Lens.com was the only place that had them!

PureVision Toric

PureVision MultiFocal

Bifocal Lenses

I love wearing my contacts because I am not constantly looking for a pair of glasses. I have checked around and Lens.com is the bargain I am looking for. They come on time and have never had a problem. Thank you!
I like the price of the contacts and in the 4 plus years that i have ordered from lens.com i always get a rebate incentive. so bonus.

Biofinity

Monthly Disposable

After researching my last prescription, I noticed that the diameter of the lenses prior to these were larger than these. Many times during the day when I blink. I feel like I am going to lose the contact. I’m sure that I’m not it just feels that way. And because I never complain about anything, I haven’t tried to correct the issue.
Ordered a few times from them now and never had an issue so far

Air Optix Aqua

Monthly Disposable

The Hydraglyde contacts are for my husband. He said they feel good and are comfortable. I asked if they were different from the Air Optic and he said there was not much difference that he could tell yet. No complaints thus far. He's been wearing them about a week.
These are just my brand of contacts I have always used them. They’re comfortable and somewhat affordable. (Given today’s inflation) and quality wise they last their allotted time worth out damage. So worth the money I pay.

Biofinity Toric

Toric Lenses

Most comfortable contacts I have ever worn.

Air Optix Night & Day Aqua

Monthly Disposable

I LOVE the fact I don’t have to take them in and out every day. I have trouble putting contacts in, so to only have to do it every 30 days is great. When I take them out, I wear my glasses for about a week to let my eyes breath, but I can’t say enough good things about my Air Optix!

Air Optix Aqua Multifocal

Bifocal Lenses

These are nice lenses. At first I didn’t notice much difference between the regular Air Optics and these. After a few days wearing off and on, I didn’t notice the dry, tired eye I struggled with in the past. These are great!

Biofinity Energys

Monthly Disposable

It's difficult for me to find contacts because I've been suffering from chronic dry eye for years. These are the best ones I've ever used, and I get to change them monthly. That's the easiest for me. Dailies are expensive. These feel hydrated enough that I don't need to use rewetting drops regularly.
These contacts were excellent. Exactly what I ordered. I called lens.com. And they were great helped me with my order in every way possible. I had it wrong and they made sure it was right before I ordered them. I love my contacts and will be ordering more from them.

Bausch + Lomb INFUSE One-Day

Daily Disposable

These contacts are exactly what I ordered, at a great price (Cheaper than any other website) and came in a reasonable amount of time. I would recommend this company for contacts.
Could be less expensive, but proper product
