How Soft Toric Contact Lenses Help Keep Astigmatism Vision Stable

Are Soft Lenses Good for Astigmatism?

Yes, soft toric lenses can be good for many wearers with regular astigmatism when the fit, prescription, and lens stability are correct. They are often easier to adapt to than hard lenses because the material is flexible. Many daily, biweekly, and monthly toric options are available, so your eye doctor can compare comfort, rotation, and vision stability. The right lens still depends on your full prescription, tear film, eye shape, and approved wearing time.

Soft toric lenses may not address every astigmatism case. Irregular astigmatism, keratoconus, post-surgical corneas, or unstable vision may require RGP, scleral, hybrid, custom, or other specialty contact lenses instead. If your vision shifts, blurs, or clears only after blinking, the toric fit may need review. Do not reorder a lens that no longer feels stable or clear.

How Do Soft Toric Contact Lenses Correct Astigmatism?

Soft contacts for astigmatism correct vision by placing different focusing powers in different parts of the lens.

1. Sphere Power

The sphere value corrects nearsightedness or farsightedness. This value may be negative for myopia or positive for hyperopia.

2. Cylinder and Axis

The cylinder value corrects the amount of astigmatism, while the axis shows where the correction should sit. These values must be entered exactly as written on your prescription.

3. Lens Stabilization

The lens design helps keep the correction aligned as you blink and move your eyes. If the lens rotates too much, the cylinder and axis correction may not stay in the right position.

Are Toric Lenses Hard or Soft for Astigmatism?

Toric lenses can be soft, but toric correction can also appear in specialty lens designs. In most product-category searches, soft toric contacts refer to flexible soft lenses that correct astigmatism with sphere, cylinder, and axis values. Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are different because they use a firm material and may correct some astigmatism through the tear layer and lens shape. Use the exact lens type written on your prescription instead of assuming every toric lens fits the same way.

Soft Toric Contacts vs Regular Soft Contacts

Soft toric contacts and regular soft contacts are not interchangeable because they correct different prescription needs.

Regular Soft Contacts

Sphere contact lenses use one main power across the lens. They may correct nearsightedness or farsightedness when astigmatism correction is not needed.

Soft Toric Contacts

Soft toric contacts include sphere, cylinder, and axis values. They are designed to correct astigmatism and must stay oriented correctly.

Ordering Difference

A regular soft contact lens cannot replace a toric lens when your prescription includes cylinder and axis. Ask your eye doctor before switching from toric to spherical lenses.

Daily vs Monthly Soft Toric Contact Lenses

Daily and monthly soft toric contacts differ in replacement timing, care steps, and supply planning.

Daily Soft Toric Contacts

Daily toric contact lenses are worn once and discarded after removal. Options may include 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST for Astigmatism, ACUVUE OASYS 1-Day for Astigmatism, PRECISION1 for Astigmatism, MyDay Daily Disposable Toric, DAILIES TOTAL1 for Astigmatism, Biotrue ONEday for Astigmatism, clariti 1 day toric, and similar prescribed daily lenses.

Monthly Soft Toric Contacts

Monthly contact lenses for astigmatism are reused during the prescribed monthly period. Options may include Biofinity Toric, ACUVUE VITA for Astigmatism, AIR OPTIX plus HydraGlyde for Astigmatism, TOTAL30 for Astigmatism, Bausch + Lomb ULTRA for Astigmatism, Proclear Toric, and PureVision 2 HD for Astigmatism.

Choosing the Schedule

Daily lenses may suit wearers who prefer a fresh pair and no storage routine. Monthly lenses may suit regular wearers who can clean, disinfect, store, and replace lenses consistently.

Which Soft Toric Contact Lenses Are Available?

Soft toric contact lenses are available across daily, biweekly, monthly, and multifocal toric categories.

Daily Toric Options

Daily options may include ACUVUE, Alcon, CooperVision, and Bausch + Lomb toric lenses for wearers who want a fresh pair each day. These lenses are discarded after removal and should not be reused.

Reusable Toric Options

Reusable options may include biweekly and monthly lenses from ACUVUE, Biofinity, AIR OPTIX, Bausch + Lomb ULTRA, TOTAL30, Proclear, Avaira Vitality, SofLens, Biomedics, and PureVision. These lenses need cleaning, disinfection, storage, and replacement on time.

Multifocal Toric Options

Multifocal contacts for astigmatism may fit wearers who also have presbyopia. These prescriptions require sphere, cylinder, axis, add power, base curve, diameter, and the exact product name.

Do Soft Toric Contact Lenses Stay in Place?

Soft toric contact lenses are designed to stay oriented, but they still move slightly with blinking. A good fit allows enough movement for comfort and tear exchange while keeping the cylinder and axis correction aligned. If the lens rotates too much, your vision may blur or shift. If the lens is too tight, it may feel uncomfortable or affect eye health.

Signs the Lens May Need Rechecking

  • Vision clears only after blinking.
  • Vision shifts when you look in different directions.
  • The lens feels unstable or moves too much.
  • The lens feels tight, dry, or scratchy.
  • One eye is consistently blurrier than the other.

Ask your eye doctor to check rotation, centering, movement, and prescription before reordering. Trial contact lenses may be used during a fitting to evaluate whether the design stays stable during blinking and normal activities.

How to Put In Soft Toric Contact Lenses

Putting in soft toric contact lenses is similar to inserting regular soft contacts, but orientation and handling still matter.

1. Wash and Dry Your Hands

Wash with soap, rinse well, and dry your hands with a lint-free towel. Avoid lotions or oils before handling lenses.

2. Check the Lens

Make sure the lens is not inside out, torn, dried out, or stuck to itself. Check that the right-eye and left-eye lenses match your prescription.

3. Insert and Let the Lens Settle

Place the lens on your eye as instructed by your eye doctor. Blink gently and allow the lens to settle, then check whether vision becomes clear and stable.

4. Remove if Something Feels Wrong

Remove the lens if it causes pain, strong irritation, sudden blur, or unusual redness. Do not force a lens to stay on your eye when it feels wrong.

Why Are Toric Contacts Sometimes Uncomfortable?

Toric contacts may feel uncomfortable if the fit, material, rotation, dryness pattern, or care routine does not match your eyes. A lens that rotates too much may blur your vision, while a lens that fits too tightly may feel dry or irritating. Deposits, damaged lenses, old solution, allergies, screen use, and long wearing time can also affect comfort. Reusable toric lenses may feel worse near replacement time if deposits build up.

Do not keep wearing a lens that feels painful, scratchy, tight, or unstable. Remove it and inspect the lens for damage or debris. If discomfort returns with a fresh lens, ask your eye doctor to check the fit and prescription. A different material, replacement schedule, or toric design may be needed.

ULTRA for Astigmatism

I have been using B+L SofLens Toric Astigmatism.

After I had been happily using them for decades, I could not reorder my contact lenses since Bausch+Lomb officially discontinued many SofLens® Toric lenses in July  2023.
As my Rx had not changed, my optometrist recommended another manufacturer, which I tried using for months, and was very disappointed.
Then on the Lens.com website, I ordered B+L ULTRA for Astigmatism Contact Lenses, and they seem just the same to me as the discontinued B+L SofLens® Toric contact lens. Now I couldn't be happier!
