Contacts for astigmatism use a toric design that keeps different lens powers aligned in the right position on your eye.

Step 2. Match the sphere power.

Cylinder, often shown as CYL, measures the amount of astigmatism correction. Toric lenses need this value because standard spherical contacts do not correct astigmatism as effectively.

Step 4. Confirm the axis number.

Axis shows the direction of your astigmatism correction and is usually written as a number from 1 to 180. Entering the wrong axis can make toric lenses feel blurry or unstable during wear.

Step 5. Check the base curve and diameter.

Base curve and diameter help determine how the lens fits on your eye. Even if the power, cylinder, and axis match, the lens still needs the correct fit details and replacement schedule.

You should not switch toric contact lens brands on your own, even when the sphere, cylinder, and axis values look the same. Toric lenses can differ in material, diameter, base curve, thickness, stabilization design, and how they settle on your eye. A different brand may rotate differently or feel less stable during wear. If you want to compare ACUVUE, Biofinity, AIR OPTIX, PRECISION1, or ULTRA toric lenses, ask your eye doctor to confirm the fit before ordering.

Check the Lens First

Wash and dry your hands before handling the lens. Make sure the lens is clean, not torn, and shaped correctly before placing it on your fingertip.

Place the Lens Carefully

Hold your eyelids open and place the toric lens gently on your eye. Toric lenses are designed to settle into position, so give the lens a moment to align after insertion.

Toric contacts and glasses can both correct astigmatism, but they work differently in daily wear. Glasses sit in front of your eyes, while toric contacts sit directly on your eyes and must match your contact lens prescription, fitting details, and lens brand.

Toric Contacts:

• Give wider side vision without eyeglass frames.
• Work well for sports, exercise, and active routines.
• Need a contact lens fitting to check stability and comfort.
• Require proper handling, cleaning, or daily replacement.

Glasses for Astigmatism:

• Do not touch your eyes or need lens insertion.
• Are easier to put on, remove, and clean.
• Need no contact lens solution, case, or replacement schedule.
• Work well when your eyes feel dry, red, or tired.
• May fog, slip, or limit side vision during activities.

Colored contacts for astigmatism are harder to find than standard toric lenses. Many mainstream colored contact lenses sold in the United States are made for plano (spherical) prescriptions and do not include cylinder and axis values.
