How To Read Your Contact Lens Prescription Before Ordering

Before ordering, review your contact lens prescription carefully. Each detail helps match your order to the lenses fitted for your eyes.

  1. Make sure your contact lens prescription is still valid. If it's expired, you'll need an updated prescription before ordering.
  2. Check the lens power for each eye. Power can appear as PWR, SPH, or D, and your right and left eye values can be different.
  3. Match the base curve and diameter listed on your prescription. These measurements help match the lens shape and fit your eye doctor prescribed.
  4. Check the product name or manufacturer. Don't switch to another contact lens unless your eye doctor approves it.
  5. Look for specialty lens values if you wear toric or multifocal contacts. Toric lenses can include cylinder and axis, while multifocal lenses can include an add value.
  6. Use a contact lens prescription, not a glasses prescription. Glasses and contact lens prescriptions are not the same.

Common Contact Lens Types

The right contact lens type depends on your prescription, wearing habits, comfort needs, and how much lens care you want to handle. Some people prefer a fresh pair every day, while others are comfortable cleaning and storing reusable lenses. Your eye doctor can help match the lens type to your eye shape, prescription, tear film, and daily routine.

Daily Disposable Contacts

Daily disposable contacts are worn once, then thrown away after removal. They're a good choice if you want a fresh, clean pair each day and don't want to deal with nightly cleaning or storage. They can also be convenient for travel, occasional wear, sports, or busy routines because you don't need to carry a lens case and solution.

Bi-Weekly Or Monthly Contacts

Bi-weekly and monthly contacts are reusable lenses that you wear during the day, remove at night, clean, and store in fresh contact lens solution. They can work well if you're comfortable following a lens care routine and replacing your lenses on schedule. These lenses may also be a practical option if you wear contacts often and prefer buying fewer boxes throughout the year.

Toric Contacts

Toric contacts are made for people with astigmatism. They correct uneven focusing caused by astigmatism while also addressing nearsightedness or farsightedness, depending on your prescription. If your contact lens prescription includes cylinder and axis values, your eye doctor may recommend toric lenses because standard soft contacts don't correct astigmatism the same way.

Multifocal Contacts

Multifocal contacts help correct vision at more than one distance. They're often used by people who need help seeing up close, far away, and sometimes at intermediate distances, such as computer range. If your prescription includes an add value, multifocal contacts may be worth discussing with your eye doctor.

Colored Contacts

Colored contacts can change or enhance your eye color, and some are available with vision correction. They can create a subtle shift, brighten your natural eye color, or give a more dramatic cosmetic effect depending on the design. You still need a valid contact lens prescription, even for plano colored contacts with no vision-correcting power, because the lenses still need to fit your eyes properly.

Rigid Gas Permeable Or Specialty Contacts

Rigid gas permeable contacts hold their shape more firmly than soft lenses and may give sharper vision for certain prescriptions or corneal shapes. Specialty contacts, such as scleral lenses, are fitted for more specific eye needs and require careful evaluation by an eye doctor. These options are usually considered when standard soft lenses don't give the comfort, fit, or clarity a wearer needs.

How Often Should You Replace Your Contact Lenses?

You should replace your contact lenses based on the schedule your eye doctor gave you and the schedule listed for that specific lens. Daily disposable contacts are worn once and thrown away after removal, while reusable soft lenses may be replaced every one to two weeks or once a month, depending on the product.

Replacement schedule is not the same as wearing time. For example, a monthly lens still needs to be removed, cleaned, and stored as directed unless your eye doctor specifically approved overnight wear. Wearing lenses beyond their replacement schedule can lead to buildup, discomfort, dryness, blurry vision, or a higher risk of eye irritation.

Can You Switch To A Different Contact Lens When Ordering Online?

No, you shouldn't switch to a different contact lens when ordering online unless your eye doctor approves the change. Contact lenses are not interchangeable just because the power looks the same. Your prescription can include the exact lens product, material, base curve, diameter, and replacement schedule.

A different lens can sit differently on your eye, move differently when you blink, or feel less comfortable after a few hours of wear. If you want to try a lower-priced lens, a different brand, or a lens with another wearing schedule, ask your eye doctor first so they can confirm whether it fits your eyes safely.

Can You Buy Contacts Without Uploading Your Prescription?

Yes, you can still order contacts online if you don't upload a prescription copy, but the seller needs enough information to verify it with your eye doctor. You'll usually need to enter your eye doctor's name or clinic, phone number, your contact lens details, and other information needed to request verification.

If the verification request is sent correctly and your eye doctor does not respond within eight business hours, the prescription can be treated as verified under the contact lens prescription verification process. This does not mean a prescription is optional. It means the seller still has to follow the required verification steps before completing the order.
