How to Read a Contact Lens Prescription for Astigmatism

A contact lens prescription for astigmatism includes extra values since toric lenses correct uneven focusing in the eye. Reading each part helps you confirm that the recommended contact lens matches the exact details provided by your eye doctor.

  1. Review the right eye and left eye separately because each eye can have different prescription values.
  2. Check the power or sphere value. This tells you the lens strength for nearsightedness or farsightedness. A minus sign means nearsightedness, while a plus sign means farsightedness.
  3. Look at the cylinder value. This shows how much astigmatism correction your lens needs. A higher number means stronger correction for the uneven curve affecting your vision.
  4. Check the axis value. This number runs from 0 to 180 degrees and tells where the astigmatism correction should sit on the lens. Toric lenses need this value so the correction lines up properly on your eye.
  5. Review the base curve and diameter. Base curve relates to how the lens curves against your eye, while diameter refers to the lens width. These details help the lens fit safely and comfortably.
  6. Match the lens details exactly when ordering. A contact lens prescription should include enough information to fill the order correctly, including power, manufacturer or material, base curve, and diameter when needed. Do not use a glasses prescription for contact lenses unless your eye doctor approves it.

Are Toric Contacts Only for Severe Astigmatism?

No, toric contacts are not only for severe astigmatism. They can be prescribed for different levels of astigmatism when your eye doctor decides that a standard soft lens will not give you stable, clear vision. Astigmatism happens when the front surface of the eye is shaped more like a football than a perfectly round ball, so light does not focus evenly on the retina.

Toric contact lenses for astigmatism are designed with different powers across the lens to correct uneven focusing. They also include stabilization features that help the lens remain in the proper position when you blink or move your eyes. If your vision looks slightly blurry, shadowed, or inconsistent in regular contacts, your eye doctor can check whether toric lenses are a better fit for your prescription.

Can You Use Your Glasses Prescription to Buy Toric Contacts?

No, you need a contact lens prescription to buy toric contacts. A glasses prescription only tells you the lens power needed in frames that sit in front of your eyes, while contact lenses sit directly on the eye. Toric contacts need extra details because the lens has to correct astigmatism and stay aligned in the right position.

A toric contact lens prescription can include sphere power, cylinder power, axis, base curve, diameter, lens brand, material, and replacement schedule. These details help match the lens to your eye shape, prescription strength, and wearing needs. Even if your glasses prescription is current, your eye doctor still needs to fit you for contacts before you order toric lenses.

Can You Sleep in Toric Contact Lenses?

No, you should remove toric contact lenses before sleeping unless your eye doctor specifically prescribed lenses approved for overnight wear. Most toric contacts are daily wear lenses, which means they are designed to be worn while you are awake and removed before bed. Sleeping in lenses that are not approved for overnight use can reduce oxygen flow to the eye and make the lenses feel dry, tight, or uncomfortable.

Sleeping in contacts can also raise the risk of redness, irritation, corneal inflammation, or eye infection. Toric lenses need to sit in a stable position to correct astigmatism properly, and dryness after sleep can make them feel harder to remove or less comfortable the next day. Follow your eye doctor's wearing schedule closely, and contact them if you wake up with pain, light sensitivity, discharge, or blurry vision that does not clear after removing your lenses.

ULTRA for Astigmatism

I have been using B+L SofLens Toric Astigmatism.

After I had been happily using them for decades, I could not reorder my contact lenses since Bausch+Lomb officially discontinued many SofLens® Toric lenses in July  2023.
As my Rx had not changed, my optometrist recommended another manufacturer, which I tried using for months, and was very disappointed.
Then on the Lens.com website, I ordered B+L ULTRA for Astigmatism Contact Lenses, and they seem just the same to me as the discontinued B+L SofLens® Toric contact lens. Now I couldn't be happier!
