What Are Contamac U.S. Contact Lenses?
Contamac U.S. contact lenses are rigid gas-permeable lenses made from the Optimum range of GP materials. Unlike soft contact lenses, which conform to the shape of the eye, RGP lenses hold their shape on the cornea and allow more oxygen to pass through to the eye than most soft lens materials. The Optimum range covers a wide spectrum of oxygen permeabilities from Dk 26 to Dk 180, giving eye care professionals the ability to prescribe a lens that matches the specific oxygen needs of each wearer's cornea.
All Optimum lenses are FDA-cleared for a broad range of prescriptions and contact lens designs including corneal, toric, multifocal, keratoconus, and scleral. Their surface chemistry is designed for excellent wettability, which helps maintain a stable tear film throughout the day and reduces dryness during wear. Like all RGP lenses, Contamac U.S. lenses require an adjustment period of several weeks before they feel fully comfortable.
Contamac U.S. Contact Lenses Available at Lens.com
Lens.com carries the Optimum range of Contamac U.S. rigid gas-permeable lenses. Each lens in the range uses a different oxygen permeability level to match different prescription and wear needs.
- Optimum Classic - Dk 26, low oxygen permeability for daily wear corneal lens designs
- Optimum Comfort - Dk 65, mid-range oxygen permeability for daily wear corneal lenses including toric, multifocal, and keratoconus designs
- Optimum Extra - Dk 100, high oxygen permeability suitable for all GP lens designs
- Optimum Extreme - Dk 125, high oxygen permeability suitable for all GP lens designs including toric, multifocal, keratoconus, and scleral
What Conditions Are Contamac U.S. Contact Lenses Good For?
Contamac U.S. Optimum lenses are most commonly prescribed for wearers whose prescriptions or eye conditions cannot be adequately addressed by standard soft contact lenses. Because RGP lenses hold their shape on the eye rather than conforming to it, they can mask certain corneal irregularities and provide sharper, more stable vision than soft lenses in these cases.
Conditions commonly addressed with Contamac U.S. lenses:
- Keratoconus - progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea that causes irregular astigmatism and blurred vision
- Irregular astigmatism - caused by corneal scarring, injury, or post-surgical changes that soft toric lenses cannot fully correct
- High refractive errors - prescriptions that fall outside the range of most soft contact lenses
- Post-surgical corneas - following procedures like LASIK, corneal transplants, or other refractive surgeries
- Scleral lens fitting - for wearers who need a larger diameter lens that vaults over the cornea and rests on the sclera
- Orthokeratology - overnight reshaping of the cornea to temporarily correct myopia during the day
Contamac U.S. Contact Lens Care
Contamac U.S. Optimum lenses are rigid gas-permeable lenses and require a different care routine than soft contact lenses. Always wash and dry your hands before handling lenses, and use only cleaning and storage solutions specifically formulated for RGP lenses as recommended by your eye care professional.
- Clean lenses daily with an RGP-approved multipurpose or conditioning solution
- Never rinse lenses with tap water as contaminants can damage the lens surface and cause eye infection
- Store lenses in fresh RGP solution each time they are removed
- Replace the lens case regularly to reduce contamination risk
- Never use soft lens solutions on RGP lenses as they are not formulated for rigid materials
- Follow your eye care professional's recommended wear and replacement schedule
How to Insert and Remove Contamac U.S. Contact Lenses
Contamac U.S. Optimum lenses are rigid gas-permeable lenses and follow a different insertion and removal process than soft lenses. Always wash and dry your hands before handling lenses.
To insert:
- Wash hands with mild soap and dry with a lint-free towel
- Rinse the lens with RGP conditioning solution and place it on the tip of your index finger
- Pull down your lower eyelid with the middle finger of your dominant hand
- Place the lens directly on the cornea while looking straight ahead
- Blink gently to center the lens and repeat with the other lens
Note: RGP lenses require an adjustment period of several weeks. Wear them consistently as skipping days will reset the adjustment process
To remove:
- Wash and dry your hands before starting
- Place the index finger of one hand at the outer corner of your eye and hold your other hand below your eye
- Look down and pull your eyelid toward your ear
- Blink and the lens should pop out
- Repeat for the other eye
