How Prescription Verification Works for Online Contact Lens Orders

When you order contact lenses online, your order needs to match a valid prescription so you receive the right lenses for your eyes. If you don't have a copy ready to upload, the seller can reach out to your eye doctor to confirm the details for you.

You provide your prescription details.

You can upload your prescription or enter your eye doctor's contact information so the seller can request verification.

The seller contacts your eye doctor.

The verification request includes details such as your name, lens power, manufacturer, base curve, diameter when needed, quantity ordered, and the date of the order.

Your eye doctor checks the request.

Your eye doctor can confirm the prescription, correct inaccurate details, or state that the prescription is expired or invalid.

The order can move forward after verification.

If your eye doctor doesn't respond within eight business hours, the prescription is treated as verified and the seller can continue processing the order.

Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Contact Lenses

Contact lenses online come in different replacement schedules, so it helps to know how often each pair should be replaced before you order. The best choice depends on your prescription, eye doctor's fitting, budget, and lens care routine.

Daily contact lenses

Daily contacts are worn once and thrown away after each use. They're a good fit if you want a fresh pair every day without cleaning or storage.

Weekly or bi-weekly contact lenses

Weekly and bi-weekly contacts are reused for a set number of days, based on your prescription and lens instructions. They need proper cleaning, disinfecting, and storage after each wear.

Monthly contact lenses

Monthly contacts are designed to be replaced every month, as directed by your eye doctor. They can be a cost-friendly option for regular wearers who are comfortable with lens care.

Make sure the replacement schedule matches the exact lens on your prescription. Don't switch from daily to monthly lenses, or the other way around, unless your eye doctor approves it.

Can You Order Contact Lenses Online If Your Prescription Is Expired?

No. You need a current, valid contact lens prescription before ordering online, so schedule an eye exam if your prescription has expired. This also gives your eye doctor a chance to check your fit, lens type, and eye health before you reorder.

Contact lens prescriptions expire because your eyes, vision needs, and lens fit can change over time. Even if your lenses still feel fine, an outdated prescription may no longer match your current eyes. Ordering with an expired prescription can lead to discomfort, blurry vision, dryness, or irritation.

An updated exam also helps confirm that your current lens brand, size, curve, and power are still right for you. Once your prescription is renewed, you can order online with more confidence and avoid delays during prescription verification.

Can You Buy Colored Contact Lenses Online?

Yes, but you still need a valid prescription, even if the lenses are only for cosmetic use. Colored contacts sit directly on your eyes, so you should only order lenses that match what your eye doctor approved for you.

A prescription confirms more than your lens power. It also includes fit details, such as the lens brand, base curve, and diameter, which help the lenses sit properly on your eyes. Poorly fitted colored contacts can cause discomfort, redness, blurry vision, or irritation.

You should also avoid costume or decorative lenses sold without prescription verification. Even plano colored contacts can affect eye health when they're not fitted correctly. For the safest fit, buy from a seller that verifies your prescription and follow your eye doctor's wearing and care instructions.

Can You Switch to a Different Contact Lens With the Same Power?

Not always. Even if the power is the same, contact lenses can differ in fit, material, diameter, base curve, water content, and replacement schedule, so your eye doctor should confirm that the new lens is safe and comfortable for your eyes.

A contact lens prescription is not interchangeable across every lens type. Two lenses with the same power can feel very different once they're on your eyes. One may move too much, sit too tightly, dry out faster, or blur when you blink.

Your eye doctor can check whether the new lens fits correctly and matches your eye health needs. This is especially important if you're switching from dailies to monthlies, spherical to toric lenses, or clear lenses to colored contacts.

ULTRA for Astigmatism

I have been using B+L SofLens Toric Astigmatism.

After I had been happily using them for decades, I could not reorder my contact lenses since Bausch+Lomb officially discontinued many SofLens® Toric lenses in July  2023.
As my Rx had not changed, my optometrist recommended another manufacturer, which I tried using for months, and was very disappointed.
Then on the Lens.com website, I ordered B+L ULTRA for Astigmatism Contact Lenses, and they seem just the same to me as the discontinued B+L SofLens® Toric contact lens. Now I couldn't be happier!
