About 1-2 Week Disposable Contacts

1-2 week disposable contact lenses are intended to be worn daily and replaced every seven to 14 days. They offer a balance between lower maintenance and comfort, which makes them a suitable option for people who may experience discomfort in the last weeks of wearing monthly disposable contacts.

Features of 1-2 Week Disposable Contact Lenses

As the name suggests, 1-2 week disposable contact lenses are made to be used for one to two weeks, after which they need to be disposed of. Most 1-2 week disposable contacts are intended to be worn daily, but there are some that are FDA-approved for overnight or extended wear. Such contacts are ideal for those who need a flexible wearing schedule, such as busy professionals, military personnel, and healthcare workers.

1-2 week disposable contacts have many advantages over both daily and monthly disposable contacts. For starters, 1-2 week disposable contacts are generally thicker than daily disposable contacts. This means they’re less likely to tear, but they still allow plenty of nourishing oxygen to pass through to the eye. The thicker composition of 1-2 week disposable contacts also means they can hold moisture better than daily disposable contacts, which tend to dry up as the day wears on. Moreover, 1-2 week disposable contacts are more economical and environmentally friendly than daily disposable contacts.

1-2 week disposable contacts also offer a more consistent level of freshness and comfort than monthly disposable contacts, which tend to become less comfortable as the wearing period goes on. Plus, 1-2 week disposable contacts give deposits less of a chance to build up compared to monthly disposable contacts. Deposits, which come in the form of proteins, lipids, and other substances that are naturally found in tears, can accumulate on contacts. This can make them feel less comfortable than when they were new. Deposit buildup may also trigger allergies. This can be prevented by wearing contacts with a relatively frequent replacement schedule, such as 1-2 week disposable contacts.

1-2 week disposable contacts are available in a wide range of prescriptions and lens types, including toric and multifocal. Toric lenses correct astigmatism, an imperfection in the curvature of the eye that causes blurred vision, while multifocal lenses correct presbyopia, the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects. Toric and multifocal lenses also correct nearsightedness and farsightedness, as these conditions may occur alongside astigmatism and presbyopia.

Popular 1-2 Week Disposable Contact Lenses

1-2 week disposable contact lenses are one of the most prescribed types of contact lenses. Popular brands of these contacts include Acuvue® Oasys with HYDRACLEAR® PLUS Technology, Acuvue 2, and Acuvue Oasys with Transitions™. All three contacts are available in near- and farsighted prescriptions, and they come with a visibility tint for easier handling.

Other popular brands of 1-2 week disposable contacts include SofLens 38 and Biomedics® 55 Premier aspheric contacts. Both contacts can be worn daily for two weeks or continuously for up to six nights and seven days.

Schedule a visit with your eye care professional to discuss your options.

How Much Are 1-2 Week Disposable Contact Lenses?

1-2 week disposable contact lenses retail for $30 to $55 per box of six lenses, with each box lasting three months. If you wear contacts regularly, expect an annual lens cost of $240 to $440.

How to Insert and Remove 1-2 Week Disposable Contact Lenses

1-2 week disposable contacts are soft disposable lenses and as such, you should follow the standard procedure for that type of lens. Start by washing and drying your hands with mild soap and water, then dry them with a lint-free towel. Scoop your first lens out of the case with your index finger of your dominant hand and rinse it with a cleaning solution that’s specially formulated for soft contacts. Inspect the lens for any tears or debris and make sure it’s not inside-out. Using the middle finger of your dominant hand, pull down your lower eyelid. If necessary, use the middle finger of your non-dominant hand to pull your upper eyelid. Look upward and gently put the lens on your eye. Blink a few times to center the lens. Repeat this with the other lens.

To remove 1-2 week disposable contacts, hold your eyelids open and gently pinch the lens between your index finger and thumb. Carefully lift the lens off of your eye. Repeat with the other lens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are weekly disposable lenses?

Weekly disposable contact lenses are made to be used for 1 to 2 weeks and then thrown away. These lenses must be removed and disinfected each night. Weekly contact lenses and those replaced bi-weekly and monthly are some of the most popular contacts available.

Can you get weekly contact lenses?

Yes. Many popular brands carry weekly and bi-weekly contact lenses to accommodate a contact lens user's comfort level, lifestyle, and budget. The most popular lenses are 1-2 week disposable contact lenses. Note that most weekly lenses refer to bi-weekly lenses that are used in overnight mode, where a user wears a contact lens for 7 consecutive days. In this instance, a 2-week lens can only last for 1 week, and then be thrown away. Otherwise, this contact lens can be worn for a total of 2 weeks (with removal each night).

What's the difference between daily and weekly contact lenses?

Daily and weekly contact lenses are both disposable contact lenses. The main difference is the lens wear schedule, as daily disposable lenses must be removed and thrown away at the end of each day. You can wear weekly disposable lenses throughout the day and night (particularly those approved for overnight wear), with guidance from your ECP. Daily contact lenses are usually thinner than weekly/bi-weekly lenses.

Can you wear contacts seven days a week?

The amount of time you can wear contact lenses in a single-use depends on the type of contacts you have (daily or extended wear) and if you have any vision health issues, such as dry eyes or sensitivity. You should have a schedule that allows you to take out the contacts and let your eyes rest for your eyes to receive enough oxygen. Please refer to your eye care professional for a prescription on how long you can safely wear your contacts each day. In general, contacts that are approved for overnight wear, and where your ECP has ok'd you to do so, can be worn for 6 consecutive nights/7 days.
