Ocular Relevance

The cornea is one of the most densely innervated tissues in the body, primarily by the trigeminal nerve (CN V). Its extreme tactile sensitivity is critical for the corneal blink reflex.

Corneal Reflex

The tactile sensation of a foreign object or light touch on the cornea immediately triggers an involuntary, bilateral blink to protect the eye. This demonstrates the high sensitivity of the tactile pathway.

Contact Lens

When fitting a contact lens, successful wear requires the corneal epithelium to adapt and desensitize slightly to the continuous tactile presence of the lens.

Is it the same as pain?

No. While severe tactile input can become painful (nociception), tactile sensation primarily concerns mechanical stimuli like pressure and texture.

What nerve mediates corneal sensation?

The sensory (afferent) arm of the corneal reflex is mediated by the ophthalmic division of the Trigeminal nerve (CN V).

How does dry eye relate to tactile sensation?

In dry eye syndrome, damaged corneal nerves can lead to hyper-sensitivity (pain/grittiness) or hypo-sensitivity (loss of protective tactile sensation), affecting tear production and blink frequency.
