What Is Reflex Blepharospasm?
Reflex blepharospasm is involuntary eyelid squeezing or closure triggered by irritation or pain signals from the eye or eyelids. It starts as a protective reflex, but it can become frequent when the ocular surface stays inflamed. Dry eye disease, blepharitis, allergies, and corneal irritation are common drivers. Symptoms often improve when the trigger is treated and the eye surface calms down. If spasms persist after eye problems are addressed, another condition such as essential blepharospasm can be considered.
