What Is Ocular Tropia?
Ocular tropia, often simply called strabismus, is a manifest misalignment in which one eye deviates away from the target of fixation while the other eye looks directly at it. The deviation can be inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), upward (hypertropia), or downward (hypotropia). Tropias can be constant or intermittent and may affect one eye or alternate between eyes. In children, persistent tropia can lead to amblyopia if the brain suppresses the deviated eye's image. In adults, new onset tropia often causes double vision.
