What Is Nystagmus Blockage Syndrome?
Nystagmus blockage syndrome is a condition in which a child with congenital nystagmus reduces eye oscillations by converging the eyes, creating an esotropia that seems to "block" the nystagmus. The inward turn can give steadier foveation and better visual acuity. On casual viewing, the esotropia may be more obvious than the underlying nystagmus. The pattern is usually noticed in infancy or early childhood. Understanding the mechanism is important for planning strabismus surgery and setting realistic goals.
