What Is a Normal Corneal Light Reflex?
A normal corneal light reflex is a pinpoint reflection of light that appears symmetrically in the center of both pupils when a person looks at a light source. Eye care professionals use this reflection clinically known as the Hirschberg Test as a quick screening tool to verify that the eyes are perfectly aligned. In a healthy individual, the glint of light should sit in the same spot on both eyes. If the reflection is centered in one eye but off-center in the other, it provides immediate clinical data that the eyes are misaligned, a condition known as strabismus.
