What Is Megalocornea?
Megalocornea is a congenital condition in which the corneal diameter is abnormally large while the cornea stays clear and of normal thickness. Horizontal diameter is usually 13 millimeters or more in each eye. The condition is often bilateral and nonprogressive and is most commonly inherited in an X linked pattern in males. Visual acuity can be normal, but high astigmatism, lens problems, and glaucoma risk can occur. Early recognition helps separate megalocornea from buphthalmos due to uncontrolled congenital glaucoma.
