What Is Javal's Rule (Astigmatism)?
Javal's rule is a clinical rule of thumb that estimates refractive astigmatism from keratometric astigmatism. It is based on the idea that corneal shape drives much of astigmatism, but internal optics also add or subtract some astigmatism. Classic versions apply a multiplier to corneal astigmatism and add a small constant to approximate the total. It is mainly used as a starting estimate, not a replacement for a full refraction.
