What Is Hyperemia (Conjunctival)?
Conjunctival hyperemia is redness of the white part of the eye caused by enlarged surface blood vessels. It is a sign rather than a diagnosis, since many issues can cause a red eye. Common triggers include allergy, infection, dryness, and irritation from smoke or wind. The redness can look mild and patchy or more widespread depending on the cause. An eye exam can identify whether the redness is from the conjunctiva or from deeper inflammation.
