What Is Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)?
Diabetic macular edema is a swelling of the central retina that develops in people living with diabetes. Fragile blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, the area that handles fine detail vision. As fluid gathers, the tissue thickens and straight lines start to look wavy or blurred. Colors can seem faded, and reading or recognizing faces becomes more difficult. Without monitoring and treatment, these changes can leave lasting gaps in central sight.
