What Is a Quadrant Scotoma?
A quadrant scotoma is a localized area of partial or complete visual loss within a single quadrant of the visual field, surrounded by areas with better sensitivity. Unlike a full quadrant defect that wipes out an entire quarter, a quadrant scotoma affects only part of that region. Patients may notice missing letters, pieces of faces, or gaps in a specific corner of their view. These scotomas can be monocular or binocular and arise from focal damage in the retina, optic nerve, or visual cortex. Precise mapping with perimetry helps define the size and density of the scotoma.
