What Is Wrap Angle?

Wrap angle, also known as "face-form tilt," is the degree to which an eyewear frame curves around the wearer's face. Measured in degrees, it defines the angle between the plane of the frame's front and the visual axis of the eye. While standard dress eyewear has a minimal wrap angle (4 to 5 degrees), sports and performance frames utilize high wrap angles (15 to 25 degrees) to provide an expanded peripheral field and protection from wind and light.

How does wrap angle induce distortion?

In high-wrap frames, the lenses are no longer perpendicular to the eye:

  • This tilt induces unwanted oblique astigmatism and prism in the lens.
  • The wearer may experience a "fishbowl" effect or a sense of dizziness.
  • Standard lenses cannot be used in high-wrap frames without severe visual compromise.

What is "Wrap Compensation" in lens design?

To fix the distortion caused by a high wrap angle, digital lenses are compensated. The software recalculates the prescription based on the specific angle of the frame. It adds counter-prism and adjusts the cylinder power so that when the lens is tilted in the frame, the final image reaching the eye is perfectly clear and undistorted.

Why is it essential for sports eyewear?

A high wrap angle is critical for athletes:

  • It eliminates the blind spots created by thick peripheral frame rims.
  • It provides a physical seal against wind, dust, and insects during high-speed activities.
  • It prevents stray light from entering the eye from the sides, which is vital for sailors and skiers.

How is wrap angle measured?

Opticians use a wrap gauge or a protractor-style tool to measure the angle from the bridge to the temporal endpiece. For high-end custom lenses, this measurement is sent to the lab along with the PD and height to ensure the lens is surfaced specifically for that degree of curvature. Miscalculating the wrap by even 2 degrees can lead to non-tolerance.

Why do my wraparound sunglasses make me feel dizzy?

This is likely because the lenses were not wrap compensated. Your brain is struggling to process the distorted peripheral light caused by the curve of the lens. You need digitally optimized lenses for that frame.

Can I put my high prescription in a wrap frame?

It is difficult. High prescriptions in wrap frames become very thick at the edges and are prone to distortion. However, with Free-form digital technology, many prescriptions up to -6.00 can now be successfully fitted in wrap eyewear.

Is wrap angle the same as base curve?

No. Base curve is the curve of the lens itself. Wrap angle is the curve of the frame as it sits on your face. You can have a flat lens in a frame with a high wrap angle, though they usually go together.
