What Is a Wide Field Lens?
A wide field lens is an ophthalmic lens engineered to maximize the clear viewing area and minimize peripheral distortion, especially in high prescriptions. This is achieved through aspheric (non-spherical) or atoric (complex curves in multiple meridians) digital surfacing. In the eyewear industry, wide field is a primary selling point for progressive addition lenses (PALs) and wrap-around sports lenses, where the goal is to provide a panoramic visual experience with zero swim or blur at the edges.
