What Is Whiplash Retinopathy?
Whiplash retinopathy is a clinical condition resulting from the rapid deceleration and acceleration forces associated with whiplash injuries, typically occurring in motor vehicle accidents. Even in the absence of direct ocular impact, the sheer force causes the vitreous gel to exert sudden traction on the delicate retinal layers, leading to foveal hemorrhages, macular edema, or the formation of a "cherry red spot" in the central vision.
